Loop
“Wander through purple heather and ancient mounds, where history and wild beauty meet beneath open skies.”
Starting from the edge of Hilversum, near the well-known parking area at the intersection of Soestdijkerstraatweg and the entrance to the Zuiderheide, this loop trail covers approximately 8 km (about 5 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers and families. The trailhead is easily reached by public transport: take a train to Hilversum Station, then transfer to a local bus heading toward Laren or Bussum, alighting at the “Zuiderheide” stop. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the aforementioned intersection, a popular gateway to the heathlands.
Heathlands and Woodland Transitions
The route quickly immerses you in the open expanse of the Zuiderheide, a classic Dutch heathland managed for biodiversity. Expect wide, sandy paths bordered by swathes of purple heather in late summer, interspersed with patches of juniper and scattered birch trees. The landscape is largely flat, with the “Zevenbergjes” (literally “Seven Little Hills”) providing gentle undulations—these are subtle, ancient sand ridges rather than true hills, rising only a few meters above the surrounding plain.
Wildlife and Flora
Keep an eye out for grazing sheep, which help maintain the heath’s unique ecosystem, and listen for skylarks and meadow pipits overhead. In the early morning or late evening, roe deer may be spotted at the woodland edges. The area is also home to rare reptiles like the sand lizard and smooth snake, especially in the sun-warmed sandy patches.
Historical and Cultural Significance
The Zuiderheide and Zevenbergjes area is steeped in history. Archaeological finds indicate that these heathlands have been used since prehistoric times, with burial mounds dating back to the Bronze Age visible along the route. These low, grassy mounds are protected monuments—please admire them from a distance. The trail also passes remnants of old boundary markers, once used to delineate land between the neighboring towns of Hilversum and Laren.
Navigation and Facilities
The loop is well-marked with local signage, but for precise navigation and to explore alternative paths, use HiiKER’s detailed trail maps. There are no cafés or restrooms directly on the trail, so bring water and snacks. Benches are scattered along the route, offering peaceful spots to rest and take in the views.
Access and Practical Tips
The trail is suitable year-round, though the sandy paths can become muddy after heavy rain. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain areas to protect wildlife and grazing livestock. Cyclists and horseback riders also use some sections, so be aware of shared paths.
This easy, scenic loop offers a quintessential Dutch heathland experience, rich in natural beauty and local history, just a short journey from the urban bustle of Hilversum.
