Point-to-Point
“Meandering past centuries-old oaks, castles, and wildflower woods, this gentle trail radiates Dutch charm.”
Starting from the charming village of Laren in Gelderland, this section of the Pieterpad—one of the Netherlands’ most iconic long-distance trails—offers a gentle 13 km (about 8 miles) walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the center of Laren, close to the historic Sint-Antoniuskerk, a recognizable landmark that’s easy to find whether arriving by car or public transport. Laren is accessible by regional bus from Zutphen or Lochem train stations, both of which connect to the national rail network.
Through Farmland and Wooded Estates
Leaving Laren, the route quickly immerses you in the quintessential Dutch countryside. Expect to traverse a patchwork of flat, open fields, interspersed with hedgerows and small woodlands. The landscape here is shaped by centuries of agriculture, and you’ll pass traditional farmhouses with thatched roofs, some dating back to the 18th century. Keep an eye out for grazing sheep and the occasional herd of cows, as well as kestrels and buzzards circling overhead.
About 4 km (2.5 miles) in, the trail skirts the edge of the Verwolde Estate, a historic manor surrounded by ancient oak and beech trees. The estate’s stately home, Huis Verwolde, is visible from the path and is known for its beautifully landscaped gardens and a monumental oak tree, one of the oldest in the Netherlands. This is a good spot for a short break, with benches and shaded areas.
Crossing Streams and Quiet Villages
Continuing south, the Pieterpad crosses several small streams and drainage ditches, remnants of the region’s historic land reclamation efforts. Wooden footbridges and well-maintained paths make these crossings easy, even after rain. Around the halfway point, you’ll pass through the hamlet of Exel, where a small café offers refreshments and a chance to refill water bottles.
The route then meanders through mixed woodland, home to roe deer, foxes, and a variety of songbirds. In spring and early summer, the forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers, including bluebells and wood anemones. The trail is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER for up-to-date navigation and trail conditions.
Approaching Vorden and Its Castles
As you near Vorden, the landscape becomes more wooded, with several stately homes and castles dotting the surroundings. Vorden itself is famous for its eight castles, and the trail passes close to Kasteel Vorden, a moated castle dating back to the 14th century. The castle grounds are open to visitors, and the nearby village center offers cafés, bakeries, and a small supermarket.
The hike ends in the heart of Vorden, near the train station, making it easy to return to your starting point or continue along the Pieterpad. Vorden station is served by regular trains to Zutphen and Winterswijk, providing convenient onward connections.
Planning and Preparation
This section of the Pieterpad is rated as easy, with well-maintained paths and minimal elevation change—less than 10 metres (33 feet) total. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain, as some sections can be muddy. The route is suitable for families and those new to long-distance hiking. Public toilets are available in Laren, Exel, and Vorden, and there are several opportunities to purchase food and drinks along the way.
