Loop
“Wander through blooming heather, whispering pines, and echoes of history on this tranquil Dutch escape.”
Starting from the edge of Bussum, a charming town in North Holland, the trailhead for this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop is conveniently located near Bussum Zuid train station, making it easily accessible by public transport from Amsterdam and other major cities. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Bussum Zuid station or nearby residential streets.
Getting Oriented and Setting Out
The route is almost entirely flat, with negligible elevation gain—ideal for beginners, families, or anyone seeking a relaxed walk through classic Dutch heathland and woodland. The path is well-marked and maintained, but for added confidence, navigation with HiiKER is recommended to stay on track, especially where smaller trails intersect.
Heathland and Woodland Landscapes
Shortly after leaving the station, the trail enters Bussummerheide, a vast expanse of open heath dotted with juniper bushes and clusters of Scots pine. In late summer, the heath erupts in purple heather blooms, attracting butterflies and bees. Keep an eye out for grazing sheep, which help maintain the landscape’s unique character. The area is also home to skylarks, buzzards, and the occasional roe deer, especially in the quieter early morning or late afternoon hours.
Aardjesberg: Subtle Elevation and Panoramic Views
At roughly the halfway point, the path gently rises to Aardjesberg, a modest sandy hill that offers a subtle change in perspective. While the elevation is minimal, the open views across the heath are striking, especially on clear days. This spot is a favorite for birdwatchers and a good place to pause for a snack.
Historical Significance and Cultural Landmarks
The Bussummerheide and Aardjesberg area is steeped in history. During World War II, the surrounding woods provided cover for resistance fighters and hidden shelters, some of which are commemorated by discreet plaques along the route. The landscape itself is shaped by centuries of grazing and sand drift, giving it a distinct, time-worn appearance.
Navigational Tips and Facilities
The loop is easy to follow, but intersections with cycling paths and bridleways can be confusing—HiiKER’s detailed mapping is invaluable here. There are no cafés or shops directly on the trail, so bring water and snacks. Public toilets are available at Bussum Zuid station.
Returning to Bussum
The final stretch leads back through mixed woodland, with occasional glimpses of Bussum’s outskirts. The proximity to the train station makes for a seamless finish, whether you’re heading home or exploring more of the Gooi region.
