Loop
“Meandering through fields and woodlands, this gentle loop invites reflection on nature and local history.”
Starting from the outskirts of the small town of Geilenkirchen, near the well-known Selskamp area, this loop trail covers approximately 9 km (about 5.6 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it an accessible and leisurely walk for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Selskamp residential area, which is easily reached by local bus services from Geilenkirchen’s main train station, or by car with parking available along the quieter residential streets.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Geilenkirchen is well-connected by regional trains from Aachen and Mönchengladbach. From the train station, local buses head towards Selskamp, with stops within a short walk of the trailhead. Drivers can follow signs to Geilenkirchen, then to Selskamp, where street parking is generally available.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The loop is well-marked and follows a combination of paved paths and compacted dirt tracks, weaving through open fields, small woodland patches, and the gentle rural landscape typical of North Rhine-Westphalia. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and real-time tracking, the route is available on HiiKER, which provides detailed mapping and waypoint information.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
- Selskamp Woodlands (Approx. 2 km / 1.2 miles in): Early in the hike, you’ll pass through a tranquil patch of mixed woodland, home to native bird species such as the European robin and blackbird. In spring, the forest floor is dotted with wildflowers. - Hindenberg Plateau (Approx. 4 km / 2.5 miles in): The trail’s namesake, Hindenberg, is a gentle rise rather than a true hill, but it offers open views across the surrounding farmland. This area is historically significant, as it was once part of a defensive line during World War II. Remnants of old bunkers and interpretive signs provide insight into the region’s wartime past. - Rural Farmland and Hedgerows: Much of the loop traverses agricultural land, with hedgerows that serve as corridors for wildlife such as hares and pheasants. In late summer, the fields are alive with the activity of harvest.
Nature and Wildlife
The flat terrain and mix of habitats make this loop ideal for spotting local wildlife. Look for kestrels hovering above the fields, and in the early morning or late afternoon, deer may be seen grazing at the woodland edges. The hedgerows are particularly active with songbirds, especially during migration seasons.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
With no significant elevation gain (0 metres / 0 feet), the route is suitable for families, casual walkers, and those seeking a relaxed outing. Surfaces are generally firm, but after rain, some sections through the woods can become muddy, so waterproof footwear is recommended. There are no steep sections or technical challenges.
Facilities and Refreshments
There are no facilities directly on the trail, but Geilenkirchen offers several bakeries, cafes, and supermarkets for pre- or post-hike refreshments. Public toilets are available at the train station and in the town center.
Planning Tips
Bring water and snacks, as there are no shops along the route itself. The open sections can be exposed to wind and sun, so pack accordingly. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a lead, especially near farmland and during nesting season for ground birds.
For navigation, download the route from HiiKER to your phone for offline use, ensuring you stay on track and can identify points of interest along the way.
