Point-to-Point
“Wander from shifting sands to serene forests, soaking in the Veluwe’s tranquil beauty and natural wonders.”
Starting from the tranquil village of Kootwijk, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop hike offers a gentle journey through the heart of the Veluwe, one of the Netherlands’ most celebrated natural regions. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy route is perfect for hikers of all levels, including families and those seeking a relaxed day outdoors.
Getting There
Kootwijk is accessible by car via the A1 motorway, with parking available near the village center. For those using public transport, take a train to Barneveld or Apeldoorn, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 107 or 108) that stops at Kootwijk, just a short walk from the trailhead.
Through the Kootwijkerzand and Huigenbosche
The hike begins near the Kootwijk village church, a recognizable landmark. Heading south, you quickly enter the Kootwijkerzand, the largest active sand drift in Western Europe. This unique landscape of shifting sands and scattered pines is a highlight of the Veluwe, offering wide-open views and a sense of solitude. After about 1.5 km (0.9 miles), the trail transitions into the Huigenbosche, a mixed woodland where Scots pine and oak dominate. Listen for woodpeckers and keep an eye out for deer, which are often spotted in the quieter stretches.
Harskamperdennen and Veentje
At around the 3.5 km (2.2 miles) mark, the route enters the Harskamperdennen, a serene pine forest planted in the early 20th century to stabilize the drifting sands. The forest floor is carpeted with moss and heather, and in late summer, the purple blooms create a striking contrast with the green pines. The trail then skirts the Veentje, a small wetland area that attracts a variety of birdlife, including herons and, in spring, migratory songbirds. This is a good spot for a break, with benches and clearings offering peaceful views.
Historical and Natural Significance
The Veluwe region has a rich history, with evidence of human activity dating back to prehistoric times. The sand drifts of Kootwijkerzand were formed by centuries of grazing and woodcutting, which stripped the land of vegetation and allowed the wind to shape the landscape. Today, the area is carefully managed to preserve its unique habitats. The forests you pass through were planted as part of early 20th-century reforestation efforts, and remnants of old sheepfolds and charcoal pits can sometimes be seen along the way.
Navigation and Safety
The trail is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for real-time navigation and to explore nearby points of interest. The terrain is mostly flat and sandy, with occasional tree roots and patches of loose sand, so sturdy walking shoes are advisable. There are no significant water crossings or steep sections, making this route accessible year-round.
Wildlife and Flora
Throughout the hike, expect to encounter a variety of wildlife, from rabbits and foxes to buzzards circling overhead. The flora changes with the seasons, with heather in bloom from August to September and mushrooms appearing in autumn. The open sand areas are home to rare insects and reptiles, so tread lightly and respect the natural environment.
Facilities are limited along the route, but Kootwijk village offers a café and restrooms near the start and end of the hike. This gentle loop is ideal for those looking to experience the diverse landscapes and quiet beauty of the Veluwe without strenuous climbs or crowds.
