Loop
“Stroll past storybook windmills and shimmering waterways, soaking in South Holland’s timeless polder charm.”
Starting from the edge of Alblasserdam, close to the iconic Kinderdijk windmills, this 20 km (about 12.4 miles) loop trail offers a flat and leisurely journey through the heart of South Holland’s polder landscape. With virtually no elevation gain, it’s an ideal route for those seeking a relaxed day out, suitable for most fitness levels and perfect for walkers who want to immerse themselves in Dutch rural scenery.
Getting There
Alblasserdam is easily accessible by public transport. From Rotterdam Centraal, take a direct bus (such as Qbuzz line 489 or 90) to Alblasserdam, which takes around 30 minutes. If arriving by car, parking is available near the Kinderdijk entrance or at the Alblasserdam Waterbus stop, both of which are convenient starting points for the loop.
Windmills and Waterways
The route quickly leads you past the world-famous Kinderdijk windmills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These 18th-century windmills are not only a symbol of Dutch ingenuity in water management but also a living museum. The first 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail skirt the edge of the windmill complex, offering panoramic views and plenty of photo opportunities. Early morning or late afternoon light is especially beautiful here, with reflections dancing on the canals.
Polder Paths and Wildlife
Continuing along the Overwaard and Achterwaterschap, the trail follows a network of dikes and towpaths. The landscape is quintessentially Dutch: wide open skies, grazing cattle, and fields crisscrossed by narrow waterways. Birdlife is abundant—look for herons, storks, and, in spring and summer, swallows darting over the water. The flat terrain makes for easy walking, and the well-maintained paths are suitable for both hiking boots and sturdy sneakers.
Historic Villages and Local Culture
Around the halfway mark, you’ll pass through the village of Nieuw-Lekkerland. Here, traditional Dutch farmhouses and small local bakeries offer a glimpse into rural life. The village church, dating back to the 19th century, is a notable landmark. If you’re interested in local history, the area’s network of pumping stations and sluices—some of which date back centuries—demonstrate the ongoing battle against water that defines much of Dutch history.
Navigation and Facilities
The route is well-marked, but for precise navigation and to explore alternative paths or points of interest, use HiiKER. Public toilets and cafes are available at Kinderdijk and in Nieuw-Lekkerland, but facilities are sparse along the more rural stretches, so plan accordingly. Bring water and snacks, especially if you prefer to picnic by the canals.
Seasonal Considerations
This loop is enjoyable year-round, but spring and early summer are particularly rewarding, with wildflowers blooming along the dikes and young animals in the fields. In winter, the landscape takes on a stark beauty, and if the canals freeze, you might even see locals skating.
With its blend of natural beauty, historic landmarks, and easy access, this loop is a classic Dutch hiking experience, offering a peaceful escape just a short distance from Rotterdam.
