Loop
“Stroll past sweeping beaches, wildflower dunes, and the iconic Delta Works on this tranquil Zeeland loop.”
Starting near the well-known Banjaardstrand beach in Zeeland, the De Banjaard Loop offers a gentle 6 km (about 3.7 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all levels, including families and those seeking a relaxed coastal walk. The trailhead is easily reached by car, with ample parking available at the Banjaardstrand parking area, just off the N57. For those using public transport, buses from Middelburg or Goes stop at Kamperland, from where it’s a short walk or bike ride to the beach and trail start.
Coastal Scenery and Landmarks
The route follows the sweeping North Sea coastline, with wide sandy beaches and panoramic views of the Oosterschelde estuary. Early on, you’ll pass the iconic Delta Works, a marvel of Dutch engineering designed to protect the region from flooding. The Oosterscheldekering, part of this system, is visible from the trail and stands as a testament to the Netherlands’ ongoing battle with the sea. Interpretive signs along the way provide insight into the history and significance of these structures.
Nature and Wildlife
Dunes and salt marshes dominate the landscape, supporting a variety of plant and animal life. In spring and summer, the dunes are dotted with wildflowers, and birdwatchers will appreciate the abundance of coastal species, including oystercatchers, terns, and sometimes even seals basking on the sandbanks. The area is also known for its rabbit and fox populations, which can occasionally be spotted in the quieter stretches of the trail.
Trail Navigation and Facilities
The loop is well-marked and mostly flat, with a mix of paved and sandy paths. HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS navigation for the route, ensuring you stay on track even in the more open dune sections where paths can be less distinct. There are several rest areas and beach pavilions along the way, offering refreshments and shelter. Public toilets are available at the main beach entrance.
Historical Context
The region’s history is deeply intertwined with the sea. The nearby village of Kamperland traces its roots to medieval times, and the land itself was reclaimed from the sea through centuries of dike building and land management. The Delta Works, completed in the late 20th century after the devastating North Sea flood of 1953, represent one of the most ambitious civil engineering projects in the world and are a point of pride for the local community.
Whether you’re interested in coastal landscapes, Dutch history, or simply a peaceful walk by the sea, this loop offers a memorable experience with easy access and plenty of opportunities to enjoy Zeeland’s unique environment.
