Loop
“Wander shimmering sand dunes and heathland blooms, where nature, history, and wildlife color every gentle step.”
Nestled in the heart of the Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park, the De Roestelberg Loop offers a gentle 6 km (about 3.7 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the De Roestelberg restaurant and parking area, just outside the village of Kaatsheuvel, a well-known landmark and easy to find whether arriving by car or public transport.
Getting There
For those traveling by car, set your navigation to De Roestelberg, Roestelbergseweg 2, 5171 RL Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands. Ample parking is available at the restaurant, which also serves as a welcoming spot for refreshments before or after your hike. If using public transport, take a train to Tilburg or 's-Hertogenbosch, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 136 or 300) toward Kaatsheuvel. From the Kaatsheuvel bus station, it’s a short taxi or bike ride to the trailhead.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The loop meanders through the unique landscape of the Loonse en Drunense Duinen, often called the “Brabant Sahara” due to its vast sand dunes and open heathland. The terrain is predominantly flat, with soft sandy paths interspersed with stretches of pine and oak woodland. Navigation is straightforward, with well-marked paths and clear signage throughout the park. For added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and track your progress.
Landmarks and Natural Highlights
Within the first kilometer, you’ll be greeted by sweeping views of the sand dunes, a rare sight in the Netherlands. These dunes are among the largest in Western Europe and have formed over thousands of years due to wind and water erosion. At around 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail skirts the edge of a tranquil heath, where in late summer, purple heather blooms in vibrant contrast to the golden sands.
Keep an eye out for wildlife such as roe deer, foxes, and a variety of birds including woodlarks and nightjars. The area is also home to rare insects and reptiles, thanks to its diverse habitats. At approximately 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll pass through a denser section of woodland, offering shade and a chance to spot squirrels and woodpeckers.
Historical and Cultural Significance
The Loonse en Drunense Duinen region has a rich history, with evidence of human activity dating back to prehistoric times. The shifting sands have long shaped local life, influencing agriculture and settlement patterns. During World War II, the area served as a hiding place for resistance fighters and refugees, adding a layer of historical intrigue to your walk.
Facilities and Practical Tips
Restrooms and refreshments are available at the De Roestelberg restaurant, both at the start and end of your hike. The sandy terrain can be challenging for strollers or wheelchairs, so plan accordingly. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain areas to protect wildlife. The trail is open year-round, but the best times to visit are spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild and the landscape is at its most colorful.
