Loop
“Set out on a sunlit circuit where shifting dunes, purple heather, and whispering woods paint a living canvas.”
Starting from the edge of National Park De Loonse en Drunense Duinen, near the well-known De Roestelberg restaurant and parking area (Roestelbergseweg 2, 5171 RL Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands), this loop trail covers approximately 10 km (6.2 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The route is a gentle circuit through one of the Netherlands’ most unique landscapes, often referred to as the “Brabant Sahara” due to its extensive sand dunes.
Getting There
For those arriving by car, ample parking is available at De Roestelberg. If using public transport, take a train to Tilburg or ’s-Hertogenbosch, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 136 or 301) toward Kaatsheuvel. Disembark at the “Roestelberg” stop, which is a short walk from the trailhead.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The loop begins by skirting the edge of the drifting sand dunes, a rare inland dune system formed thousands of years ago by wind and water erosion. The sandy stretches can be challenging on the legs, but the terrain remains flat throughout. Hikers should use HiiKER for reliable navigation, as the shifting sands can obscure some trail markers, especially after windy days.
Landmarks and Natural Highlights
- De Roestelberg Sand Dunes (0–3 km / 0–1.9 miles): The first section immerses you in open sand plains dotted with hardy Scots pine and juniper. Early morning or late afternoon light casts dramatic shadows across the dunes, making this a favorite spot for photographers. - Kraanvensche Heide (3–6 km / 1.9–3.7 miles): The trail transitions into heathland, especially vibrant in late summer when the heather blooms purple. This area is home to skylarks, woodlarks, and occasionally deer. Keep an eye out for the rare sand lizard basking on sunny days. - Woodland and Wetlands (6–9 km / 3.7–5.6 miles): The path meanders through mixed oak and pine forest, providing shade and a change in scenery. Small ponds and wetlands attract frogs, dragonflies, and a variety of waterfowl. - Return to De Roestelberg (9–10 km / 5.6–6.2 miles): The final stretch brings you back to the starting point, passing by picnic areas and the inviting terrace of the De Roestelberg restaurant, perfect for a post-hike refreshment.
Historical and Cultural Notes
The Loonse en Drunense Duinen region has a rich history, shaped by centuries of grazing, logging, and sand drift. The dunes themselves were once a threat to local villages, with shifting sands encroaching on farmland and settlements. Conservation efforts in the 20th century stabilized much of the area, preserving its unique ecosystem. The nearby village of Kaatsheuvel is also famous as the home of Efteling, one of Europe’s oldest theme parks.
Preparation Tips
Given the sandy terrain, sturdy walking shoes are recommended. There is little shade on the dunes, so sun protection and plenty of water are essential, especially in summer. The trail is well-marked but can be confusing in the open sand—download the route on HiiKER before setting out. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain sections to protect wildlife.
This easy, scenic loop offers a rare glimpse into the Netherlands’ wild side, with a blend of open dunes, heath, and forest, all within easy reach of major cities.
