Loop
“Wander through woodlands, golden fields, and historic estates on a peaceful, scenic loop near Joppe.”
Nestled near the village of Joppe in the Dutch province of Gelderland, this gentle 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop offers a tranquil escape through the heart of the Achterhoek region. With virtually no elevation gain, the route is accessible for hikers of all abilities, making it ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a peaceful day outdoors.
Getting There The trailhead is conveniently located near the Joppe village church, Sint-Johannes de Doperkerk, a recognizable landmark at Dorpsstraat 1, 7215 AE Joppe. For those arriving by public transport, take the train to Deventer or Zutphen, then transfer to a local bus (Arriva line 56) that stops at Joppe, Kerk, just steps from the trail’s start. Drivers will find parking available near the church and along the main street.
Trail Experience
Woodlands and Heath Setting out from the church, the path quickly leads into a patchwork of mixed woodlands and open heath. Towering oaks and beeches line the early sections, their canopies alive with the calls of songbirds and the occasional woodpecker. In spring and summer, the forest floor is dotted with wildflowers and ferns, while autumn brings a vibrant display of golden leaves.
Historic Estates and Landmarks At roughly 2 km (1.2 miles), the route skirts the edge of the Zonnenberg estate, a historic property known for its stately manor and landscaped grounds. While the manor itself is private, glimpses of its elegant façade and manicured gardens can be caught through the trees. The area has a rich history, with estates like Zonnenberg and nearby Joppe dating back to the 19th century, reflecting the region’s agricultural and aristocratic heritage.
Open Fields and Farmland Beyond the estates, the trail opens onto wide fields and meadows, where grazing sheep and horses are a common sight. The flat terrain makes for easy walking, and the open vistas offer sweeping views of the Achterhoek countryside. Keep an eye out for kestrels and buzzards circling overhead, as well as hares darting through the grass.
Wildlife and Nature The loop is home to a variety of wildlife, including roe deer, foxes, and a diverse array of birds. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to spot animals, especially along the quieter stretches near the forest edges. In wetter months, small ponds and ditches attract frogs and dragonflies.
Navigation and Facilities The route is well-marked with local trail signs, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the loop and track your progress. There are no significant climbs or descents, and the paths are mostly wide and well-maintained, though some sections may be muddy after rain. Benches are scattered along the way, offering spots to rest and enjoy the scenery.
Refreshments and Points of Interest Back in Joppe, the village café near the church provides a cozy spot for coffee and traditional Dutch pastries. The church itself, built in the late 19th century, is worth a quick visit for its neo-Gothic architecture and peaceful setting.
This loop offers a gentle introduction to the landscapes and history of Gelderland, blending natural beauty with glimpses of the region’s storied past.
