Point-to-Point
“Wander through a mosaic of meadows, ancient villages, and whispering woods in peaceful Westerwolde.”
Starting from the tranquil village of Jipsinghuizen, this 18 km (about 11.2 miles) route along the Westerwoldepad offers a gentle, flat walk through the easternmost reaches of the Netherlands, with virtually no elevation gain. The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available near the village center, and by public transport via bus connections from larger towns like Winschoten or Stadskanaal, with the nearest bus stop at Jipsinghuizen, Kerk.
Through the Westerwolde Landscape
The path quickly immerses you in the serene landscapes of Westerwolde, a region known for its patchwork of meadows, woodlands, and winding streams. Early on, you’ll follow the banks of the Ruiten Aa, a meandering stream that has shaped the local landscape for centuries. The area is a haven for birdlife—look out for kingfishers darting over the water and herons stalking the shallows. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the banks, attracting butterflies and bees.
Historic Villages and Cultural Heritage
At around 6 km (3.7 miles), you’ll pass through Sellingen, a picturesque village with a centuries-old church and traditional Saxon farmhouses. Sellingen’s roots stretch back to the Middle Ages, and the village green is a pleasant spot for a rest. The trail continues south, weaving through mixed forests and open fields, where you may spot roe deer grazing at dawn or dusk.
Nature Reserves and Borderlands
Between Sellingen and Laude, the route skirts the edge of the Metbroekbos, a protected woodland rich in oak and beech. This section is particularly peaceful, with shaded paths and the chance to hear woodpeckers drumming in the trees. The Westerwolde region has a unique history as a borderland—during the Eighty Years’ War, it was a contested area between the Dutch and Spanish, and you’ll find remnants of old boundary markers and dikes along the way.
Approaching Laude
The final stretch leads you through open countryside, with expansive views across the Westerwolde fields. The village of Laude, your endpoint, is a quiet hamlet near the German border. Public transport from Laude is limited, so plan your return via bus from nearby Ter Apel, about 3 km (1.9 miles) further south, or arrange a pickup.
Navigation and Preparation
The Westerwoldepad is well-marked, but for detailed navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make this route suitable for all fitness levels, though waterproof footwear is recommended in wetter months due to occasional muddy sections. Bring water and snacks, as services are limited between villages.
This hike offers a blend of natural beauty, quiet rural life, and a glimpse into the layered history of the Dutch-German borderlands, making it a rewarding day out for walkers seeking tranquility and a touch of heritage.
