Loop
“Wander through sunlit dunes, pine-scented forests, and wild heath on this tranquil, history-laced circuit.”
Starting from the outskirts of Huijbergen, a small village in North Brabant, the Nieuwe Dreef, Borgvlietsche Duinen and Woeste Gedeelte Loop offers a gentle 10 km (about 6.2 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Nieuwe Dreef and the main road leading into Huijbergen, close to the entrance of the Borgvlietsche Duinen nature area. For those arriving by public transport, buses from Bergen op Zoom stop at Huijbergen Dorp, a short walk from the trailhead. Drivers will find parking available near the village center or at the edge of the Borgvlietsche Duinen.
Navigating the Route
The loop is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for easy navigation through the varied landscapes. The route meanders through a patchwork of sandy dunes, pine forests, and heathland, with wide, flat paths suitable for families and casual walkers. Expect to cover the full loop in about 2.5 to 3 hours at a relaxed pace.
Landscapes and Natural Features
The Borgvlietsche Duinen are a highlight, featuring undulating sand dunes and scattered pine groves. These dunes are remnants of ancient river systems and have been shaped by centuries of wind and water, creating a unique microhabitat. The area is home to a variety of birdlife, including woodpeckers and nuthatches, and in spring and summer, the heath bursts into color with blooming heather and wildflowers. The Woeste Gedeelte, or “Wild Section,” lives up to its name with more rugged, less-manicured terrain, offering a sense of seclusion and tranquility.
Historical and Cultural Points
Huijbergen and its surroundings have a rich history, with traces of Roman roads and medieval settlements in the area. The nearby Klooster Huijbergen, a former monastery, is a notable landmark just north of the trailhead and worth a short detour. The region was also significant during World War II, with the forests and dunes providing cover for resistance activities; occasional information panels along the route share stories from this era.
Trail Conditions and Practical Tips
The entire loop is almost flat, with an elevation gain of less than 5 metres (16 feet), making it ideal for those seeking a leisurely walk or an introduction to hiking. The sandy sections can be soft after dry weather, while forested stretches offer shade and shelter from wind. There are no major water crossings or technical challenges, but sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some paths may become muddy.
Facilities are limited along the route, so bring water and snacks. The village of Huijbergen has a few cafés and shops for refreshments before or after your hike. Dogs are allowed on most sections but should be kept on a leash, especially in areas with grazing livestock or nesting birds.
For navigation, download the route on HiiKER to ensure you stay on track and make the most of the loop’s scenic and historical highlights.
