“From Vleuten’s edge, wander the Green Heart’s canal-laced polders—big skies, reed whispers, and wind-tested resolve.”
This is a long, flat, lowland loop through the Dutch “Green Heart” (Groene Hart) landscape: canals, dikes, peat meadows, reedbeds, lakes, and tidy villages strung together by cycle paths and farm roads. At ~115 km (about 71 mi) with ~0 m / 0 ft of climbing, the challenge is almost entirely about time-on-feet, wind exposure, and keeping your feet happy on hard, level surfaces rather than elevation.
A practical starting point is Vleuten Station (Utrecht)—a major, easy-to-reach rail stop with services into Utrecht Centraal. The station area around Stationsplein, Vleuten (Utrecht) is a convenient “hike head” because you can arrive by train, find food/water nearby, and step straight onto paths that quickly leave the built-up edges for open polder.
At ~115 km / 71 mi, most hikers will treat this as: - a 2-day outing (e.g., ~55–60 km / 34–37 mi per day), or - a 3-day outing (e.g., ~35–40 km / 22–25 mi per day), unless you’re specifically training for ultradistance.
Use HiiKER to keep track of the many junctions where cycle routes, towpaths, and dike paths intersect—this region is dense with parallel waterways and near-identical bridges, so it’s easy to drift onto the “right-looking” path that runs one canal over.
1) Vleuten to the open polders (0–20 km / 0–12 mi, ~0 m / 0 ft gain) You’ll transition from suburban edges into classic polder scenery: long straight drainage canals, narrow footbridges, and big skies. Look for: - Willow-lined ditches and reed fringes—prime habitat for small birds and amphibians. - Working farmland: cattle pastures and hay fields on peat soils. Stay on the path; field edges can be soft and privately managed.
Wildlife is subtle but constant: grey herons, egrets, coots, moorhens, and in open meadows you may spot lapwings and geese depending on season. Early morning and dusk are best for bird activity.
2) Toward Vinkeveensche Plassen (20–55 km / 12–34 mi, ~0 m / 0 ft gain) As you approach the Vinkeveen lake district, the landscape shifts from uniform meadows to a mosaic of water, reedbeds, and marinas. The Vinkeveensche Plassen are known for clear water and a patchwork of small islands and canals—many created or shaped by historical peat extraction and later recreational development.
What to watch for here: - Narrow dike paths with cyclists moving quickly—keep right, be predictable, and use shoulder checks before stepping around puddles. - Exposed lake edges: wind can be stronger and more chilling near open water, even on mild days. - Limited shade: bring sun protection; the flatlands can feel hotter than expected.
Resupply is usually easiest in towns/villages around the lakes—plan your water carefully because long stretches can be “all scenery, no shops.”
3) Across the Green Heart toward Nieuwkoop (55–90 km / 34–56 mi, ~0 m / 0 ft gain) This middle portion is the most “endless” in the best and hardest ways: straight horizons, rhythmic footfalls, and a sense of moving through a living water-management system. Historically, this entire region has been shaped by peat digging, land subsidence, and centuries of Dutch water engineering—dikes, pumping, and drainage that turned wetlands into workable pasture while also creating lakes where peat was removed.
You’ll likely pass: - Canal locks and pumping infrastructure (sometimes subtle, sometimes prominent), reminders that the landscape is actively maintained. - Old farmsteads and ribbon villages built along higher ground and dikes—settlement patterns that reflect the constant negotiation with water.
Wildlife and nature highlights: - Reedbeds: listen for reed-dwelling birds; you may also see raptors hunting over open fields. - Wet meadow birds: depending on season, the meadows can be alive with calls and display flights.
