Out and Back
“Journey through The Hague’s vibrant neighborhoods, tranquil forests, and breezy coastlines in a single unforgettable loop.”
Starting from the heart of The Hague, near the iconic Den Haag Centraal Station, this 22 km (about 13.7 miles) loop offers a unique urban hiking experience with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The route weaves through the diverse neighborhoods, lush parks, and coastal stretches that define the municipality of s-Gravenhage.
Getting There and Trail Access
Den Haag Centraal Station is a major transport hub, easily reached by train from Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and other Dutch cities. Trams and buses also serve the station, and there are several parking garages nearby for those arriving by car. The trailhead is just outside the station, making it convenient for both local and international visitors.
Urban Landscapes and Green Spaces
The first section leads you through the bustling city center, where you’ll pass the Binnenhof, the seat of the Dutch parliament, and the historic Hofvijver pond. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the route transitions into the leafy expanse of Haagse Bos, one of the oldest forests in the Netherlands. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and a variety of birdlife as you follow shaded paths beneath ancient oaks and beeches.
Cultural and Historical Highlights
At approximately 6 km (3.7 miles), you’ll reach the Peace Palace, home to the International Court of Justice. The palace gardens are a highlight, and the visitor center offers insight into the city’s role in international diplomacy. Continuing west, the trail skirts the stately embassies and art nouveau mansions of the Archipelbuurt district.
Dunes and the North Sea Coast
Around the 12 km (7.5 miles) mark, the landscape shifts dramatically as you enter the Scheveningse Bosjes and Westduinpark, a protected dune area teeming with wildflowers and rabbits. The sandy trails here are flat and easy, with occasional glimpses of the North Sea. After another 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll arrive at Scheveningen Beach, a lively stretch of coastline famous for its pier, seafood restaurants, and wide promenade. This is a great spot to pause for refreshments or simply enjoy the sea breeze.
Return Through Residential and Historic Quarters
The final leg of the hike loops back through the Statenkwartier, known for its elegant 19th-century architecture, and the vibrant shopping streets of Frederik Hendriklaan. The route then meanders past the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag (now Kunstmuseum Den Haag), renowned for its modern art collection, before returning to the city center.
Navigation and Safety
The entire route is well-marked with local signage, but for precise navigation and real-time updates, use HiiKER. The terrain is predominantly paved or hard-packed, with no significant elevation changes, making it suitable for all fitness levels. Urban sections are well-lit and busy, while the parks and dunes offer a quieter, more natural atmosphere.
Wildlife and Seasonal Considerations
Expect to see a mix of urban wildlife—herons, ducks, and songbirds in the parks, and rabbits and foxes in the dunes. Spring and summer bring vibrant wildflowers and lush greenery, while autumn offers colorful foliage in Haagse Bos. The coastal section can be breezy, so pack a windbreaker even in warmer months.
Historical Significance
s-Gravenhage, or The Hague, has been the seat of Dutch government since the 16th century and is steeped in history. The route passes several monuments and museums that reflect the city’s political and cultural heritage, making this hike as enriching for history enthusiasts as it is for nature lovers.
