Point-to-Point
“Wander through emerald meadows, tranquil lakes, and whispering woods on a gentle journey to historic Enkhuizen.”
Starting from the rural outskirts near Oosterwijzend, this 17 km (about 10.5 miles) route offers a flat, leisurely walk through the heart of North Holland’s West-Frisian countryside, with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy day out. The trailhead is accessible by local bus from Hoorn or Enkhuizen, with the nearest stop at Oosterwijzend, just a short walk from the start. For drivers, parking is available in the village or at nearby farmsteads.
Through the West-Frisian Landscape
The path quickly immerses you in a patchwork of meadows, ditches, and canals, typical of reclaimed polder land. Early on, you’ll pass through Lutjebroek, a village whose name means “little marsh,” reflecting the area’s centuries-old battle with water. The land here was drained and cultivated as early as the Middle Ages, and you’ll notice the straight lines of ditches and fields—a legacy of Dutch engineering. Keep an eye out for grazing sheep and the occasional stork or heron fishing in the waterways.
Lutjebroker Weel and Streekbos
At around 5 km (3 miles), you’ll reach Lutjebroker Weel, a small lake formed by a dike breach centuries ago. This tranquil spot is a haven for waterfowl, especially in spring and autumn when migratory birds stop to rest. The path skirts the water’s edge, offering benches for a peaceful break.
Continuing west, the route enters Streekbos, a 72-hectare (178-acre) nature reserve and recreational forest. Here, the landscape shifts to woodland, with birch, alder, and willow lining the trails. Streekbos is a hotspot for birdwatchers—listen for woodpeckers and warblers, and look for signs of foxes and deer. The area also features a visitor center, café, and observation tower, making it a good place to pause and explore.
Final Stretch to Enkhuizen
Leaving Streekbos, the trail follows quiet country lanes and cycle paths toward Enkhuizen. The final 6 km (3.7 miles) pass through open farmland and small hamlets, with wide views across the polder. As you approach Enkhuizen, the skyline is dominated by the spires and towers of this historic port town.
Enkhuizen itself is steeped in maritime history, once a major harbor for the Dutch East India Company. The town’s defensive walls, old harbors, and the Zuiderzee Museum are well worth exploring if you have time at the end of your walk.
Navigation and Practical Tips
The entire route is well-marked, but for detailed navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER. Public transport links are excellent, with frequent trains from Enkhuizen back to Hoorn and Amsterdam. Bring water and snacks, as services are limited between villages, though Streekbos offers a café and restrooms. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make this hike suitable for all fitness levels, including families and casual walkers. Expect a mix of paved and unpaved surfaces, and be prepared for wind, as the open polder can be breezy even on mild days.
