Loop
“Wander through blooming heather, tranquil woods, and storied hills in the heart of Sallandse Heuvelrug.”
Starting from the outskirts of Holten, the trailhead for this 13 km (about 8 miles) loop is conveniently located near the Holterberg Nature Museum, a well-known landmark in the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. The area is easily accessible by car, with parking available at the museum or nearby visitor centers. For those arriving by public transport, Holten train station is the closest stop, and local buses connect the station to the park entrance, making it straightforward to reach the starting point.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route gently undulates through the Sallandse Heuvelrug, with a total elevation gain of around 100 metres (approximately 330 feet), making it suitable for hikers of all abilities. The path is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS guidance for this specific trail.
Landscapes and Natural Highlights
The first section leads through open heathland, especially vibrant in late summer when the heather blooms in shades of purple. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail ascends the gentle slopes of the Holterberg, offering panoramic views over the surrounding forests and moorland. This area is known for its tranquility and is a habitat for rare bird species, including the black grouse, which is a conservation highlight of the region.
Continuing for another 3 km (1.9 miles), the path enters mixed woodland, where ancient oaks and pines provide shade and shelter for deer, foxes, and a variety of songbirds. The forest floor is often carpeted with moss and wildflowers, especially in spring. Keep an eye out for woodpeckers and, if you’re lucky, the elusive European badger.
Wullenberg and Hegejanskamp
At roughly the halfway point, the trail reaches Wullenberg, a modest hill with historical significance. During World War II, the surrounding forests were used as hiding places by the Dutch resistance, and discreet memorials can be found along the route. Interpretive signs provide context about the area's wartime history and its role in local folklore.
Shortly after, the path skirts the Hegejanskamp, a scenic open area that was once common grazing land. Today, it’s managed for biodiversity, with grazing sheep helping to maintain the heathland ecosystem. This is a good spot for a rest, with benches and wide views across the landscape.
Final Stretch and Return
The final 4 km (2.5 miles) descend gently back toward Holterberg, passing through more heath and forest. The last section offers glimpses of the Sallandse Heuvelrug’s rolling hills and, on clear days, distant views toward the IJssel valley. The trail loops back to the starting point near the museum, where refreshments and further information about the park are available.
Hikers should bring water, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing, as the open heath can be exposed to wind and sun. The trail is well-maintained year-round, but sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after rain when some sections can be muddy. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife.
