Loop
“Journey through ancient woodlands, blooming heath, and shimmering lakes where history and wildlife quietly intertwine.”
The Erfgooiersbos, Dassenbos, and Wasmeer Loop is an approximately 8-kilometer (5-mile) circular trail located near Hilversum in the North Holland province of the Netherlands. With minimal elevation gain, this easy-rated hike offers a serene journey through diverse landscapes, including dense forests, open heathlands, and tranquil lakes.
Trailhead Access
The trailhead is conveniently accessible from Hilversum. For those using public transportation, Hilversum Media Park Station serves as a nearby access point. From the station, it's a short walk to the starting point of the trail. If traveling by car, parking is available near the trailhead, providing easy access to the loop.
Trail Overview
Beginning in the Erfgooiersbos, the path meanders through a lush forest predominantly composed of native oak and birch trees. This area, once part of an ancient woodland, was reforested in the mid-20th century to combat soil erosion and preserve the natural habitat. As you progress, the trail leads into the Dassenbos, aptly named for its population of badgers. Recent conservation efforts, including the installation of wildlife tunnels under nearby roads, have significantly bolstered the local badger population.
Hilversums Wasmeer
Approximately halfway through the loop, you'll encounter the Hilversums Wasmeer, a picturesque lake nestled within the Goois Nature Reserve. Historically, this lake served as a washing place for sheep, a practice that has left its mark on the region's cultural heritage. Today, the Wasmeer is a haven for birdwatchers, with species such as the tufted duck, pochard, and, occasionally, the little grebe gracing its waters. A well-positioned birdwatching hut offers an excellent vantage point for observing these avian inhabitants.
Flora and Fauna
The trail traverses a variety of ecosystems, each supporting diverse plant and animal life. In the forested sections, keep an eye out for buzzards and green woodpeckers, while the open heathlands are home to lizards and, if you're fortunate, grazing deer. The heathlands also showcase a vibrant display of wildflowers during the spring and summer months, adding a splash of color to the landscape.
Navigation and Safety
The loop is well-marked with red trail markers, ensuring straightforward navigation. For enhanced route planning and real-time guidance, consider using HiiKER, a comprehensive hiking app that provides detailed maps and trail information. While the trail is generally easy to follow, it's advisable to stay on designated paths to protect the delicate ecosystems and to ensure personal safety.
Historical Significance
The region holds historical significance, with remnants of prehistoric civilizations, including burial mounds dating back 3,000 to 4,000 years, visible in the landscape. These ancient sites offer a glimpse into the area's rich past and the early human settlements that once thrived here.
