Loop
“Wander through whispering pines and blooming heath, discovering wildlife, history, and hidden tales along the way.”
Starting from the edge of Beekbergen, just south of Apeldoorn, the trailhead is conveniently located near the entrance to Landal Heideheuvel holiday park, a well-known local landmark. For those arriving by public transport, buses from Apeldoorn Central Station stop at Beekbergen, from where it’s a short walk to the trailhead. Drivers will find ample parking at the holiday park or nearby public lots.
Woodland Paths and Heathland Views The loop covers approximately 18 km (about 11 miles) with a gentle elevation gain of around 100 metres (330 feet), making it accessible for most walkers. The route quickly immerses you in the tranquil forests of the Veluwe, with tall pines and ancient oaks lining the sandy paths. Early on, the trail passes through the Noordweg, a historic route once used by local farmers and traders. Keep an eye out for old boundary stones and remnants of traditional Dutch woodland management.
After about 4 km (2.5 miles), the landscape opens up to the Spelderholt estate. This area is known for its stately manor, Spelderholt Castle, built in the early 20th century and now part of an agricultural research institute. The castle grounds are dotted with ornamental ponds and rare tree species, offering a glimpse into the region’s aristocratic past.
Leesterheide Heath and Wildlife Continuing south, the trail enters the Leesterheide, a broad expanse of heathland that bursts into purple bloom in late summer. This section, around the 10 km (6 mile) mark, is a haven for wildlife. Roe deer, foxes, and a variety of birds—including woodpeckers and buzzards—are commonly spotted. The sandy soil and open vistas provide excellent opportunities for photography and quiet reflection.
Navigation and Trail Conditions The paths are well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for real-time navigation and to explore optional side trails. Surfaces range from compacted sand to forest floor, with occasional muddy patches after rain. Sturdy walking shoes are advisable, though the gentle gradients mean trekking poles are optional.
Cultural and Historical Highlights Throughout the loop, interpretive signs detail the area’s history, from prehistoric settlements to World War II events. The Veluwe region was a strategic location during the war, and several bunkers and memorials can be found just off the main route. Local folklore is rich here—ask at the visitor center near the trailhead for stories about the “white women” spirits said to haunt the heath at dusk.
Facilities and Refreshments Rest areas with benches are spaced every few kilometers, and there are picnic spots near Spelderholt Castle and at the Leesterheide viewpoint. The village of Beekbergen, at the start and end of the loop, offers cafés, bakeries, and a small supermarket for supplies.
This loop is ideal for those seeking a blend of natural beauty, gentle exercise, and a touch of Dutch history, all within easy reach of Apeldoorn.
