Loop
“Bask in sweeping heathland blooms, tranquil wetlands, and whispers of ancient history on this gentle loop.”
Nestled in the heart of North Holland, this 6 km (3.7 miles) loop trail offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Bussum Zuid train station, which provides easy access by public transport from Amsterdam and other major cities. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Bussumerheide car park, just a short walk from the start.
Getting Started and Navigation
The route begins at the edge of the Bussumerheide, a well-known heathland area. Hikers can use HiiKER for reliable navigation throughout the loop, ensuring they stay on track and make the most of the scenic route.
Heathlands and Open Spaces
The first section leads you across the Zuiderheide, a vast expanse of heathland dotted with juniper bushes and scattered birch trees. In late summer, the heather blooms in vibrant purple, attracting photographers and nature lovers alike. The open landscape is home to skylarks, meadow pipits, and the occasional roe deer, so keep an eye out for wildlife moving quietly through the brush.
Laarder Wasmeer: Wetlands and Wildlife
About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, the trail skirts the Laarder Wasmeer, a shallow lake surrounded by reed beds and marshy ground. This area is a haven for birdwatchers, with regular sightings of herons, grebes, and sometimes even the rare bittern. The wetlands are also important for amphibians and dragonflies, especially in spring and early summer.
Heidebloem and Historical Context
Continuing on, the path passes through the Heidebloem, a section of heathland named after the heather flower. This region has a rich history, with evidence of prehistoric settlements and ancient burial mounds nearby. The heathlands were traditionally used for grazing sheep and collecting sod for fuel, shaping the landscape over centuries. Informational signs along the route provide insight into the area's cultural and natural heritage.
Returning to the Trailhead
The final stretch loops back through mixed woodland, offering shade and a change of scenery before returning to the open heath. The entire route is well-marked and maintained, with benches at intervals for rest and observation.
Practical Tips
There are no significant climbs, and the terrain is mostly sandy paths and grassy tracks, suitable for sturdy walking shoes but not requiring specialized gear. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in certain areas to protect wildlife. Bring water and snacks, as there are limited facilities along the route, though cafés and shops can be found in Bussum, a short distance from the trailhead.
This loop is ideal for a relaxed half-day outing, offering a blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and a glimpse into the region’s historical landscape.
