Loop
“Waves of purple heath, peaceful woods, and ancient echoes await on this enchanting Gooi region loop.”
Starting from the edge of Hilversum, this 26 km (16 mile) loop hike traverses the serene heathlands and forests of the Gooi region, with virtually no elevation gain—making it accessible for most walkers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Hilversum Sportpark railway station, which is easily reached by frequent trains from Amsterdam and Utrecht. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the station or at the nearby parking area at the entrance to the Westerheide.
Westerheide and Zuiderheide Heathlands
The route begins by crossing the Westerheide, a vast expanse of open heath dotted with juniper bushes and scattered pine trees. In late summer, the landscape transforms into a sea of purple as the heather blooms. This area is home to grazing sheep and Scottish Highland cattle, which help maintain the heath’s unique ecosystem. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for skylarks, stonechats, and the occasional buzzard circling overhead.
Continuing south, the trail merges into the Zuiderheide, where the terrain remains flat and open, offering panoramic views across the heath. The sandy paths here are well-marked, but it’s wise to use HiiKER for navigation, as the network of intersecting trails can be confusing. The Zuiderheide is also notable for its Bronze Age burial mounds, visible as low, grassy humps—reminders of the area’s ancient human history.
Hilversums Wasmeer and Forests
At roughly the halfway point, the route skirts the Hilversums Wasmeer, a tranquil lake surrounded by woodland. This is a prime spot for a rest, with benches overlooking the water and opportunities to spot waterfowl such as grebes and herons. The surrounding forest is a mix of oak, beech, and pine, providing welcome shade on sunny days. Red deer and foxes are occasionally seen in the quieter stretches.
Hoorneboegsche Heide and Estate
The final section leads across the Hoorneboegsche Heide, another broad heathland, before passing the historic Hoorneboeg estate. The estate, with its stately villa and landscaped grounds, dates back to the 18th century and is now used for retreats and cultural events. The trail here is lined with old beech avenues and offers glimpses of the estate’s gardens.
Practical Information
The entire loop is well-suited for a full-day hike, with several access points to public transport along the way, including Hilversum Sportpark and Hilversum Mediapark stations. Cafés and rest stops are sparse on the heath, so bring sufficient water and snacks. The sandy, mostly flat paths are easy underfoot, but can become muddy after rain. Dogs are allowed on most sections, though some areas require leashes due to grazing livestock.
This hike offers a blend of open heath, tranquil woodland, and glimpses of Dutch cultural history, all within easy reach of major cities. For precise navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, consult HiiKER before setting out.
