Loop
“Westerheide Loop invites you through a tapestry of purple heather, grazing sheep, and ancient echoes.”
Starting from the edge of Hilversum, the Westerheide Loop offers a gentle 9 km (about 5.6 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the parking area at the intersection of Soestdijkerstraatweg and the Bussumergrintweg, just north of Hilversum, and is easily reached by public transport—Hilversum train station is a short bus or bike ride away.
Getting Oriented and Navigation
The Westerheide is a classic Dutch heathland, and the open landscape means navigation is straightforward. The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the loop and track your progress. The flat terrain ensures you won’t need to worry about steep climbs or descents.
Heathland Scenery and Wildlife
The Westerheide is renowned for its expansive heath, which bursts into a sea of purple heather in late summer. The landscape is dotted with solitary Scots pines and small groves of birch, providing a picturesque backdrop throughout the year. Keep an eye out for grazing sheep, which help maintain the heath’s unique ecosystem, and you may spot roe deer at dawn or dusk. Birdwatchers will appreciate the chance to see skylarks, stonechats, and the occasional buzzard circling overhead.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the loop, you’ll pass the iconic sheepfold (Schaapskooi), a traditional structure where the local flock is sheltered. This is a great spot to pause and learn about the centuries-old practice of heathland management. Further along, the trail skirts the edge of the Spanderswoud forest, offering a brief change of scenery with denser woodland and the chance to spot woodpeckers or squirrels.
Historical Significance
The Westerheide has a rich history, with evidence of prehistoric burial mounds scattered across the heath. These low, grassy mounds are subtle but significant, marking the area’s use by early inhabitants thousands of years ago. The heathland itself is a product of centuries of grazing and land management, reflecting the deep connection between people and landscape in this part of the Netherlands.
Access and Facilities
Parking is available at the Soestdijkerstraatweg/Bussumergrintweg intersection, and the area is well-served by local buses from Hilversum station. Cyclists can also reach the trailhead easily via dedicated bike paths. There are several benches along the route for rest stops, and the open nature of the heath means you’ll want to bring sun protection and water, as shade is limited.
The Westerheide Loop is a tranquil escape into classic Dutch heathland, offering a blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and subtle historical intrigue, all within easy reach of Hilversum.
