Point-to-Point
“From bustling Mediapark to tranquil lakes, this gentle route weaves urban energy into lush, watery wilds.”
Starting from the vibrant Mediapark in Hilversum, this 14 km (about 8.7 miles) route is a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. Mediapark is easily reached by train, with Hilversum Media Park station just steps away from the trailhead. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Mediapark complex.
Urban Beginnings and Transition to Nature
The first stretch leads you through the modern media district, quickly transitioning into quieter residential streets. Within the first kilometer, you’ll leave the urban bustle behind and enter the green corridors that characterize the region. The Heimanspad, named after the Dutch naturalist Eli Heimans, is a highlight early on. This path winds through a mosaic of meadows and small woodlands, offering a peaceful escape and the chance to spot local birdlife such as herons and finches.
Melkmeent and Wetland Wonders
Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, the trail enters the Melkmeent, a protected wetland area. This section is especially rich in biodiversity, with reed beds, ponds, and marshes supporting frogs, dragonflies, and a variety of waterfowl. The flat, open landscape provides sweeping views and a sense of tranquility. Boardwalks and well-maintained paths keep your feet dry even after rain.
Wijde of Bovenste Blik and Historical Context
At approximately 10 km (6.2 miles), you’ll reach the Wijde of Bovenste Blik, a pair of scenic lakes that are remnants of historical peat extraction. These lakes are now havens for wildlife and popular with local anglers. The area’s history is closely tied to the reclamation and management of water, a theme that runs throughout the Gooi and Vecht region. Interpretive signs along the route explain the significance of these waterworks and the centuries-old struggle to keep the land dry.
Approaching Naarden-Bussum
The final stretch leads you through the outskirts of Bussum, with glimpses of the fortified town of Naarden visible in the distance. Naarden is one of the best-preserved star forts in Europe, and its distinctive bastions and moats are a testament to the region’s strategic importance. The hike ends near Naarden-Bussum railway station, providing easy onward connections by train or bus.
Navigation and Practical Tips
The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time updates, use HiiKER for navigation. Bring water and snacks, as amenities are limited between Mediapark and Bussum. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths make this hike suitable for all fitness levels, and it’s enjoyable year-round, though spring and early summer offer the best wildlife viewing.
