Loop
“Wander through a tapestry of purple heath, ancient woods, and tranquil ponds in the heart of Gooi.”
Nestled in the heart of the Gooi region, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop offers a gentle, nearly flat walk through some of the Netherlands’ most enchanting heathland and woodland landscapes. With virtually no elevation gain, this route is accessible for hikers of all abilities, making it ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a peaceful day outdoors.
Getting There The trailhead is conveniently located near the Hoorneboeg estate, just south of Hilversum. For those arriving by public transport, Hilversum train station is the nearest major hub. From there, local buses or a short taxi ride will bring you to the Hoorneboeg area. If driving, parking is available at the Hoorneboeg estate (Hoorneboeg 5, 1213 RE Hilversum), which serves as a perfect starting point for the loop.
Heathland and Woodland Wonders Setting off from the estate, the path quickly leads you into the Hoorneboegse Heide, a broad expanse of heathland that bursts into purple bloom in late summer. The open landscape is dotted with juniper bushes and scattered birch trees, providing habitat for skylarks, stonechats, and the occasional roe deer. The sandy soil underfoot makes for easy walking, and the wide views across the heath are a highlight, especially in the early morning or late afternoon light.
At around 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail transitions into mixed woodland, where ancient oaks and beeches create a cool, shaded canopy. Listen for woodpeckers and spot squirrels darting through the undergrowth. The forest floor is often carpeted with moss and, in spring, wildflowers.
Zwarte Berg and Historical Significance Approaching the halfway point, you’ll reach Zwarte Berg, a modest rise that stands out in the otherwise flat landscape. While the elevation change is minimal, this area is notable for its archaeological significance—remnants of prehistoric burial mounds can be found here, a testament to the region’s long history of human settlement. Informational signs along the route provide insight into these ancient sites.
Continuing the Loop The path loops back toward the Hoorneboeg estate, passing through more heathland and skirting the edge of small ponds and wetlands. These water features attract a variety of birdlife, including herons and, in spring, frogs and newts. Benches along the way offer spots to rest and take in the tranquil scenery.
Navigation and Facilities The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the loop and track your progress. There are no significant climbs or technical sections, and the trail surface is generally firm, though it can become sandy or muddy after rain. Restrooms and a café can be found at the Hoorneboeg estate, making it a pleasant place to start or end your walk.
This easy, scenic loop is a wonderful introduction to the natural and historical richness of the Gooi region, offering a blend of open heath, ancient woodland, and quiet wildlife encounters just a short journey from Hilversum.
