Loop
“Stroll beneath towering trees and grand estate gates, where woodland calm meets centuries of Dutch elegance.”
Starting from the leafy outskirts of Hilversum, this gentle 5 km (about 3.1 miles) loop with virtually no elevation gain is perfect for those seeking a tranquil walk through some of the Netherlands’ most cherished estate landscapes. The trailhead is conveniently located near Corvershof, a historic estate at the edge of the Corversbos, easily accessible from Hilversum’s city center. For those arriving by public transport, Hilversum railway station is just over 2 km (about 1.2 miles) away, with local buses stopping at ‘s-Gravelandseweg, a short walk from the start. Drivers will find parking available at Corvershof or along the nearby ‘s-Gravelandseweg.
Estate Landscapes and Historic Pathways
The route begins by weaving through the Corversbos, a serene woodland once part of the private grounds of the Corvers family. Towering beech and oak trees line the wide, sandy paths, and in spring, carpets of wildflowers brighten the forest floor. After about 1 km (0.6 miles), the trail transitions onto the Weg naar Gooilust, a historic avenue that once served as a carriageway between the grand estates of the region.
Gooilust Estate and Gardens
At roughly the halfway mark, you’ll enter the Gooilust estate, a highlight of the hike. This 18th-century estate is renowned for its landscaped gardens, stately avenues, and ornamental ponds. The grounds are managed by Natuurmonumenten, and you’re likely to spot red squirrels, woodpeckers, and—if you’re lucky—roe deer grazing at the woodland edges. The gardens themselves are a showcase of rhododendrons and rare trees, with interpretive signs providing insight into the estate’s botanical treasures.
Navigation and Points of Interest
The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, HiiKER offers detailed maps and GPS navigation for this trail. Along the way, keep an eye out for the ornate gates and historic outbuildings of Gooilust, as well as the old ice cellar, a relic from the days before refrigeration. Benches are scattered throughout the estates, offering peaceful spots to pause and soak in the surroundings.
Accessibility and Trail Conditions
With a flat profile and well-maintained paths, this hike is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The trail is mostly unpaved but firm, making it accessible for strollers and wheelchairs in dry weather. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash, especially in areas where wildlife is abundant.
Getting There
By public transport, take a train to Hilversum station, then bus 104 or 105 towards ‘s-Graveland, alighting at the ‘s-Gravelandseweg stop. From there, it’s a short walk to Corvershof. By car, set your navigation to Corverslaan 1, 1213 RW Hilversum, where parking is available near the estate entrance.
This easy, scenic loop offers a glimpse into the region’s aristocratic past, with a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage that makes it a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
