Loop
“Wander through peaceful villages, sweeping fields, and timeless churches on this story-rich Frisian loop.”
The Ringiapaad and Haitze Holwerdapaad Loop is an approximately 8-kilometer (5-mile) circular hike near Boksum in Friesland, Netherlands. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy trail offers a delightful exploration of the Frisian countryside, connecting the villages of Boksum, Blessum, and Deinum.
Starting Point and Access
The hike begins at a small parking area at the end of Pypsterbuorren in Boksum. For those using public transportation, Boksum is accessible via bus services from Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland. If traveling by car, Boksum is conveniently located just southwest of Leeuwarden, with parking available near the trailhead.
Trail Overview
From the parking area, proceed through the underpass and follow the street "It Holt." Before reaching the restaurant "It Holt," turn left and, after passing the sign indicating the built-up area of Deinum, take another left onto a pedestrian path leading to Sjouke de Zeestritte. Continue left for a short distance, then turn right into Feytsmahof, passing by the ice rink. Afterward, turn left back onto Sjouke de Zeestritte and then left again onto Spoorstritte, which transitions into Heechpaed, leading to the church of Deinum, notable for its distinctive "sipel" (onion-shaped dome).
Historical Landmarks
In Deinum, the church stands as a prominent landmark with its unique dome. Continuing from the church, walk along Bûterhoeke, then turn right and subsequently left onto the old church path "de Alde Leane" towards Blessum. After crossing the railway (exercise caution), this path leads to 'Cardahûs.' However, before reaching 'Cardahûs,' turn right at the intersection with Blessumerdyk towards Blessum. In Blessum, visit the small church, which houses archaeological finds from the former Ringiastate estate located opposite the church.
Natural Scenery and Wildlife
North of Blessum, in the sharp bend of Blessumerdyk, the Haitze Holwerdapaad begins, leading back to Boksum via Terphûs and Cardahûs. This section traverses open meadows and offers views of the Frisian landscape, characterized by expansive fields and traditional farmhouses. Birdwatchers may spot various species native to the region, especially near the bird-watching hut along the route.
Final Stretch
The trail continues towards the church of Boksum. From the church, proceed through the village center (Buorren) to the birthplace of writer Ulbe van Houten at It Reedtsje 10. Then, follow Oedsmawei and Tiltsjedyk to exit the village towards Deinum, eventually turning right onto Pypsterbuorren to return to the starting point.
