Loop
“Stroll from Heusden through blooming heaths, whispering woods, and centuries-old paths steeped in local history.”
Starting near the charming village of Heusden in the southern Netherlands, this 18 km (about 11.2 miles) loop trail offers a gentle, flat walk through the varied landscapes of the Peel region, with virtually no elevation gain. The trailhead is conveniently located close to the Heusden town center, making it accessible for those arriving by car or public transport. If traveling by train, the nearest major station is Deurne, from which local buses connect to Heusden. For drivers, parking is available near the village center, close to the intersection of Pastoor Simonisstraat and Kerkstraat.
Getting Oriented and Navigation
The route is well-marked, but for peace of mind and detailed navigation, HiiKER provides an up-to-date digital map of the entire loop, including waypoints and points of interest. The trail follows a combination of the Vlosberg Weg and Peel Weg, both of which are historic rural paths that have connected local communities for centuries.
Landscape and Natural Features
The walk begins by weaving through the Bossen, a patchwork of mixed woodlands and open fields. Early in the hike, you’ll notice the transition from cultivated farmland to the more wild, heath-covered expanses typical of the Peel. This region is known for its peat bogs, which played a significant role in the local economy from the Middle Ages through the 19th century. The flat terrain makes for easy walking, suitable for all fitness levels and ideal for families or those seeking a relaxed day out.
Wildlife and Flora
Keep an eye out for roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds, especially in the quieter stretches of the forest. The Peel is also home to rare dragonflies and butterflies, particularly in late spring and summer. The heathlands burst into color with blooming heather in August, while the woodlands are rich with mushrooms and wildflowers in spring and autumn.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
About halfway along the loop, the trail skirts the edge of the Astensche Peel, a protected nature reserve that preserves remnants of the once-vast peat bogs. Interpretive signs along the route explain the history of peat extraction and its impact on the landscape and local communities. The nearby village of Liessel, just off the trail, features a historic church and several traditional Dutch farmhouses, offering a glimpse into rural life in North Brabant.
Trail Conditions and Facilities
The paths are mostly wide, well-maintained dirt or gravel tracks, with occasional paved sections near villages. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the forest edges and open heath. Public toilets and cafes can be found in Heusden and Liessel, making it easy to plan rest stops.
Planning Your Visit
This loop is accessible year-round, though waterproof footwear is recommended in wetter months due to occasional muddy patches in the peatland sections. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash, especially in nature reserves. Cyclists may share some sections of the route, so be mindful of other trail users.
For those interested in extending their adventure, the Peel region offers additional walking and cycling routes, all easily navigable with HiiKER. The area’s flat terrain and scenic beauty make it a favorite for both locals and visitors seeking a peaceful escape into nature.
