Loop
“Meandering through shimmering wetlands, tranquil canals, and vibrant meadows, this loop unveils Twente’s natural and historic charm.”
Starting from the outskirts of Hengelo, this 10 km (about 6.2 miles) loop trail offers a flat and accessible route, making it ideal for beginners and families. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Retentiegebied Kristalbad, a well-known water retention and nature area situated between Hengelo and Enschede. For those arriving by public transport, both Hengelo and Enschede train stations are within easy reach, with local buses stopping near Kristalbad. Drivers will find parking available at the Kristalbad visitor area, close to the intersection of the A35 and N18 roads.
Route Overview and Navigation
The loop connects the urban edges of Hengelo and Enschede, weaving through a mosaic of wetlands, meadows, and wooded patches. The terrain is almost entirely flat, with negligible elevation gain—less than 10 metres (about 33 feet) over the entire route—making it accessible for all fitness levels. The path is well-marked, but for added confidence, hikers can use HiiKER to follow the route and track their progress.
Highlights and Landmarks
Kristalbad Retention Area Within the first kilometre, you’ll enter the Kristalbad, a unique water management and nature reserve. This area was designed to filter and retain water from the surrounding cities, creating a haven for birdlife and amphibians. Elevated boardwalks and observation platforms offer panoramic views of reed beds and open water, where you might spot herons, kingfishers, and even the occasional roe deer along the edges.
Transitioning to the rural outskirts, the trail skirts the Twentekanaal, a historic canal completed in the 1930s to support regional industry and agriculture. The canal’s towpaths are lined with poplars and willows, providing shade and a tranquil atmosphere. Watch for barges and recreational boats, as well as anglers along the banks.
Nature and Wildlife
The wetlands of Kristalbad are a hotspot for biodiversity. In spring and summer, wildflowers bloom along the dikes, attracting butterflies and bees. The shallow pools are frequented by grebes, coots, and sometimes rare waders. The area is also a stopover for migratory birds, making binoculars a worthwhile addition to your pack.
Cultural and Historical Context
The region between Hengelo and Enschede has a rich industrial heritage, with textile mills and factories once dominating the landscape. Remnants of this history can be glimpsed in the old brick buildings and canal infrastructure. The Kristalbad itself is a modern example of Dutch water engineering, blending ecological restoration with flood management.
Practical Tips
The trail surface is a mix of gravel, paved paths, and grassy tracks. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections may be muddy. There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, particularly near the Kristalbad observation points. Public toilets are available at the Kristalbad visitor area.
For refreshments, both Hengelo and Enschede offer cafés and shops within a short distance from the trailhead. The loop can be walked in either direction, and with its easy rating, it’s suitable for children, strollers, and even cyclists.
