Loop
“Wander through Van Gogh’s inspiration: tranquil woodlands, blooming heather, and peaceful ponds await discovery.”
Starting from the outskirts of Nuenen, a small town just east of Eindhoven in the Netherlands, this 27 km (about 16.8 miles) loop trail offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most fitness levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Collse Watermolen, a historic watermill famously painted by Vincent van Gogh, which serves as a recognizable landmark and a practical starting point for both drivers and those arriving by public transport. Buses from Eindhoven Central Station stop in Nuenen, from where it’s a short walk or cycle to the watermill.
Navigating the Route
The loop is well-marked, but for added confidence and route details, HiiKER provides comprehensive navigation tools and offline maps. The terrain is predominantly sandy paths, forest tracks, and heathland trails, with occasional stretches along quiet rural roads. Expect a mix of open heath, pine and deciduous woodland, and tranquil ponds.
Papenvoortsche Heide
After leaving the Collse Watermolen, the route heads north into the Papenvoortsche Heide, a broad expanse of heathland interspersed with patches of woodland. This area is known for its purple heather blooms in late summer and is home to skylarks, woodlarks, and the occasional roe deer. The sandy soil and open vistas make for easy walking and excellent birdwatching opportunities.
Collsche Heide and Schoutse Vennen
Continuing east, the trail enters the Collsche Heide, a slightly more wooded area with a network of small streams and drainage ditches. The landscape here is shaped by centuries of peat extraction and agriculture, and you’ll notice the subtle undulations and old field boundaries. At around the halfway point, the path skirts the Schoutse Vennen, a series of shallow ponds and wetlands that attract dragonflies, frogs, and waterfowl. Benches along the water’s edge provide peaceful spots for a break.
Cultural and Historical Highlights
The region is steeped in history, with the Collse Watermolen dating back to the 14th century and still operational today. Van Gogh lived and painted in Nuenen, and the surrounding countryside inspired many of his works. Information boards along the route highlight the area’s cultural heritage and natural history.
Practical Considerations
The entire loop is flat, with a total elevation gain of less than 10 metres (about 33 feet), making it suitable for families and those seeking a relaxed day out. Surfaces can be sandy or muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. There are several access points to the trail, but parking is available near the Collse Watermolen. For refreshments, Nuenen offers cafés and shops, and there are picnic spots along the route.
Wildlife is abundant, especially in the quieter sections, so keep an eye out for buzzards, hares, and a variety of butterflies. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in nature reserves. The trail is open year-round, with each season offering a different perspective on the heath and woodland landscapes.
