Loop
“Stroll through serene wetlands, wooden bridges, and wildflower meadows where nature and history intertwine.”
Starting from the outskirts of Rockanje, near the well-known recreational area of Quackjeswater, this 6 km (about 3.7 miles) loop is a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities, families, and those seeking a relaxed day outdoors. The trailhead is easily reached by car, with parking available at the Quackjeswater parking lot (Quackjeswater, 3235 Rockanje, Netherlands). For those using public transport, buses from Rotterdam and Spijkenisse connect to Rockanje, with a short walk from the nearest stop to the trailhead.
Quackjeswater Nature Reserve
The route quickly immerses you in the Quackjeswater nature reserve, a protected wetland area renowned for its birdlife. Early in the hike, you’ll pass the Quackjeswater lake, a haven for waterfowl such as grebes, herons, and cormorants. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars, as the reed beds and open water attract a variety of species, especially during migration seasons. The flat, well-maintained paths are suitable for strollers and wheelchairs, and several observation points offer opportunities to pause and take in the scenery.
Houten Paardjes and Kakelenburg
Continuing along the loop, you’ll encounter the Houten Paardjes, a series of wooden bridges and boardwalks that cross marshy ground and small streams. These structures not only provide safe passage but also allow you to observe the unique wetland flora up close, including rare orchids and carnivorous plants in spring and summer. The Kakelenburg, a small wooded rise, is a notable local landmark. While not high, it offers a slightly elevated view over the surrounding landscape and is a good spot for a rest.
Historical and Natural Highlights
This region of Voorne-Putten has a rich history, with the wetlands historically used for peat extraction and later as grazing land. The careful management of water levels is evident in the network of dikes and canals, some of which date back centuries. Interpretive signs along the route provide insights into the area’s transformation from agricultural land to a protected nature reserve.
Navigation and Safety
The entire loop is well-marked, but for added confidence, hikers are encouraged to use HiiKER for real-time navigation and trail updates. The terrain is mostly gravel and dirt paths, with occasional muddy patches after rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended. There are no significant hazards, but as with all wetland areas, insect repellent is useful in warmer months.
Facilities and Accessibility
Rest areas and benches are spaced throughout the route, and there are picnic spots near the lake. Toilets are available at the main parking area. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife. The loop is open year-round, though spring and early summer offer the best opportunities for wildlife viewing and wildflowers.
This easy, scenic loop is ideal for those looking to experience the tranquility of Dutch wetlands, observe local wildlife, and enjoy a leisurely walk through a landscape shaped by both nature and history.
