Point-to-Point
“Wander from Hellendoorn to Ommen through blooming heather, ancient hills, and storied woodland vistas.”
Starting from the charming village of Hellendoorn, this 21 km (about 13 miles) route to Ommen is a gentle journey through the heart of Overijssel’s Salland region, with a total elevation gain of around 100 metres (328 feet). The trailhead is easily accessible: Hellendoorn is well-served by local buses from Nijverdal, which itself is on the main rail line between Zwolle and Enschede. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the Hellendoorn village center, close to the Dorpsstraat and the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park visitor center.
Through Ancient Heathlands and Forests
The route quickly leaves the village behind, entering the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. This area is renowned for its rolling heathlands, pine forests, and sandy soils. Early in the hike, you’ll ascend Eelerberg, a modest hill rising to about 40 metres (131 feet). The summit is crowned by ancient beech trees and offers sweeping views over the purple heather in late summer. The Eelerberg area is also dotted with burial mounds dating back to the Bronze Age, a reminder of the region’s long human history.
Continuing north, the trail meanders through mixed woodland, where you may spot roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds. The landscape alternates between open heath and dense forest, with occasional sandy clearings. The path is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER for real-time navigation and trail updates.
Archemerberg and the Vecht Valley
At roughly the halfway point, you’ll reach Archemerberg, the highest point on the hike at 78 metres (256 feet). This hill is a glacial remnant, formed during the last Ice Age, and its summit provides panoramic views across the Vecht valley and the distant Lemelerberg. The open heath here is a haven for rare birds such as the nightjar and tree pipit, and in late August, the landscape is awash with blooming heather.
Descending from Archemerberg, the trail follows sandy paths and quiet country lanes, passing through small hamlets and farmland. The final stretch approaches Ommen, a historic town on the banks of the river Vecht. Ommen’s old windmill and riverside promenade are worth exploring if you have time at the end of your hike.
Practical Considerations
The route is mostly easy underfoot, with gentle gradients and well-maintained paths. Expect some sandy sections, especially on the hills, which can be slippery after rain. There are several picnic spots and benches along the way, particularly near the summits of Eelerberg and Archemerberg. Water sources are limited, so carry enough for the day. Public toilets can be found at the visitor center in Hellendoorn and in Ommen.
For return travel, Ommen has a train station with regular services to Zwolle and Emmen, as well as bus connections to nearby towns. If you’ve parked in Hellendoorn, public transport options make it easy to return to your starting point.
This hike offers a blend of natural beauty, gentle elevation, and glimpses into the ancient history of the Salland region, making it an ideal day out for walkers of all abilities.
