Loop
“Wander through timeless meadows, storied farms, and shaded woods where wildlife and history quietly entwine.”
Starting from the outskirts of Raalte, the Vlaminckhorst and Raalterwoold Loop is a gentle 12 km (about 7.5 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Vlaminckhorst estate, just south of Raalte, and is easily reached by car via the N35 or by taking a train to Raalte station, followed by a short local bus ride or a pleasant walk to the starting point.
Getting Oriented and Navigation
The route is well-marked, but for added confidence, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS navigation, ensuring you stay on track through the varied landscapes. The loop is mostly on wide, well-maintained paths, suitable for families and those seeking a relaxed day outdoors.
Landscapes and Natural Highlights
The first section leads you through the historic Vlaminckhorst estate, a patchwork of meadows, ancient oak avenues, and stately farmhouses. The estate itself dates back several centuries and is a fine example of the traditional Salland countryside, with its hedgerows and small woodlands. Keep an eye out for roe deer grazing at the woodland edges and listen for woodpeckers tapping in the old trees.
As you continue, the trail enters the Raalterwoold, a tranquil forested area that offers a cool, shaded walk beneath tall beech and pine trees. This section, roughly 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike, is particularly rich in birdlife—nuthatches, treecreepers, and the occasional tawny owl can be spotted or heard. In spring and early summer, the forest floor is dotted with wildflowers and ferns.
Cultural and Historical Features
Midway through the loop, you’ll pass several traditional Dutch farms, some of which have stood for over a hundred years. These farms are characteristic of the Salland region, with their red-tiled roofs and timbered barns. The area around Raalterwoold was once part of a vast peat bog, and you may notice remnants of old drainage ditches and canals, a testament to the region’s agricultural transformation over the centuries.
Practical Tips and Wildlife
The terrain is flat and mostly dry, but after heavy rain, some sections near the forest can become muddy, so waterproof footwear is recommended. There are benches and picnic spots at regular intervals, especially near the halfway point, making it easy to pause and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash, especially during the nesting season for ground-nesting birds.
Public transport users can return to Raalte station from the end of the loop, while drivers will find ample parking near the Vlaminckhorst estate entrance. The entire route is suitable for a leisurely half-day outing, with plenty of opportunities to observe local wildlife and soak up the rural charm of Overijssel.
