Loop
“Wander through Heino’s tranquil meadows, shimmering lakes, and castle gardens for a truly picturesque escape.”
Starting from the outskirts of Heino, a charming village in the Dutch province of Overijssel, this 9 km (about 5.6 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking a leisurely day outdoors. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Heino train station, making it easily accessible by public transport from Zwolle or Deventer. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the station or in the village center.
Exploring Jacobsgat and De Bril
The route quickly leads you into the serene Dutch countryside, where you’ll pass through a patchwork of meadows, small woodlands, and tranquil ponds. Jacobsgat and De Bril are two notable water features along the way, both remnants of historical peat extraction that shaped much of the local landscape. These shallow lakes now serve as important habitats for waterfowl and amphibians—keep an eye out for herons, grebes, and the occasional kingfisher darting across the water.
Kasteel Het Nijenhuis and Its Grounds
At roughly the halfway point, you’ll approach Kasteel Het Nijenhuis, a stately manor surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and a sculpture park. The castle dates back to the 14th century and has been meticulously restored; today, it houses part of the Museum de Fundatie’s art collection. Even if you don’t enter the museum, the grounds are open to the public and offer a peaceful spot to rest and admire both the architecture and the outdoor sculptures.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The entire loop is well-marked and follows a combination of paved paths, gravel tracks, and grassy dikes. With no significant elevation gain (0 metres/0 feet), the walk is suitable for all fitness levels, including families and those with limited mobility. The area is popular with cyclists as well, so be mindful at path intersections. For navigation, HiiKER provides an accurate and up-to-date map of the route, ensuring you stay on track throughout the journey.
Nature and Wildlife
Spring and summer bring a burst of wildflowers to the meadows, while autumn colors the woodlands in gold and red. Roe deer, hares, and foxes are sometimes spotted in the quieter stretches, especially early in the morning. The wetlands attract a variety of dragonflies and butterflies, making this a rewarding walk for nature enthusiasts.
Getting There
Heino is well-connected by train, with regular services from Zwolle (about 15 minutes) and Deventer (about 25 minutes). From the station, it’s a short walk to the trailhead. If driving, follow signs to Heino and use the public parking near the station or village center. Local buses also serve Heino from surrounding towns.
This loop offers a blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and easy accessibility, making it an ideal choice for a relaxed day out in the Dutch countryside.
