Loop
“Wander through shimmering fens and sunlit heath, where wildflowers, birds, and echoes of history await.”
Starting from the outskirts of Eindhoven, near the well-known Natuurpoort De Plaetse in the Strabrechtse Heide, this 15 km (about 9.3 miles) loop offers a flat, easy walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for beginners or those seeking a relaxed day out. The trail is accessible by public transport: take a train to Eindhoven Centraal, then bus 320 or 24 towards Someren, alighting at the Heeze, Strabrechtse Heide stop, which is a short walk from the trailhead. For drivers, parking is available at Natuurpoort De Plaetse, located at Plaetse 71, 5591 TX Heeze.
Wetlands and Heathland Wonders
The route quickly immerses you in the serene landscapes of the Strabrechtse Heide, one of the largest heathlands in the Netherlands. Early on, you’ll skirt the Waschven, a tranquil fen surrounded by open heath and scattered birch trees. This area is a haven for birdlife—watch for the darting silhouettes of reed warblers and the occasional marsh harrier overhead. The path is well-marked and mostly consists of sandy tracks and compacted earth, making navigation straightforward. For those who prefer digital navigation, the entire loop is mapped on HiiKER.
Kranenmeer and s Heerenven: Nature and History
At around 5 km (3.1 miles), the trail passes the Kranenmeer, a shallow lake with a rich history as a former peat-cutting site. The surrounding wetlands are dotted with rare plant species, including sundews and bog asphodel, and in spring and summer, the air is alive with dragonflies and butterflies. Pause at the wooden observation platform for sweeping views and a chance to spot grazing Highland cattle, which help maintain the heathland ecosystem.
Continuing on, the path leads to s Heerenven, another picturesque fen at about the 10 km (6.2 miles) mark. This area is steeped in local lore, with archaeological finds indicating human activity dating back to the Bronze Age. The fen’s mirror-like waters reflect the sky and surrounding pines, creating a peaceful atmosphere ideal for a rest stop.
Trail Conditions and Practical Tips
The entire loop is flat, with a total elevation gain of less than 5 metres (16 feet), making it accessible for most fitness levels. The sandy soil can become muddy after heavy rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended in wet weather. There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, particularly near the fens, but facilities are limited—carry enough water and snacks for the day.
Wildlife enthusiasts should bring binoculars for birdwatching, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in nature reserve sections. Cyclists occasionally share some sections of the trail, so stay alert on narrower paths.
Navigation and Safety
Waymarking is clear, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is advised for extra confidence, especially at junctions where multiple trails intersect. Mobile reception is generally good throughout the area. The nearest emergency services are based in Heeze, about 5 km (3.1 miles) from the trailhead.
This loop offers a gentle immersion into the unique landscapes and quiet beauty of North Brabant’s heathlands, with plenty of opportunities to observe wildlife, enjoy local history, and experience the tranquility of Dutch wetlands.
