The Heerderstrand and Tonnenberg Loop is a scenic 13 km (approximately 8 miles) trail located near Heerde in the Gelderland province of the Netherlands. With minimal elevation gain, this easy loop is suitable for hikers of all skill levels.
Getting There
To reach the trailhead by car, set your GPS to Heerderstrand, located at Ossenbergweg, 8181 NR Heerde, Netherlands. Parking is available near the entrance. For those using public transport, take a train to Zwolle, then transfer to a bus heading to Heerde. Alight at the Heerde Centrum stop; from there, it's a short walk to the trailhead.
Trail Overview
The loop begins at Heerderstrand, a picturesque lake formed from sand extraction during motorway construction. Now a popular swimming spot in summer, the lake is surrounded by sandy beaches and woodlands. Zwolse Bos and Tonnenberg
After approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), the path leads into Zwolse Bos, a dense forest of pine and deciduous trees. The forest floor is carpeted with ferns and wildflowers, especially vibrant in spring and summer. At around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll reach Tonnenberg, a modest hill considered the heart of Zwolse Bos.
