Loop
“Meandering through Voorschoten’s polders and historic estates, this gentle loop dazzles with water, wildlife, and Dutch charm.”
Starting from the outskirts of Voorschoten, a charming Dutch town just southwest of Leiden, this 16 km (about 10 miles) loop offers a flat, leisurely walk through the heart of South Holland’s lush polders, tranquil waterways, and historic estates. With virtually no elevation gain, this route is ideal for beginners, families, or anyone seeking a relaxed day outdoors.
Getting There
The trailhead is conveniently located near Voorschoten Station, making it easily accessible by public transport. Trains from The Hague or Leiden arrive frequently, and the station is just a short walk from the start of the loop. For those arriving by car, parking is available at or near the station and in the town center.
Route Overview and Navigation
The loop weaves through a patchwork of green meadows, canals, and small forests, passing through the neighborhoods and estates of De Vrolijk, Speerpunt, and Allemansgeest. Navigation is straightforward, with well-marked paths and signage, but for added confidence and route tracking, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS guidance.
Highlights and Landmarks
- De Vrolijk: Early in the walk, you’ll skirt the edges of De Vrolijk, a peaceful residential area bordered by wide-open fields and grazing livestock. The flat landscape offers expansive views, especially striking in spring when wildflowers bloom along the ditches. - Speerpunt: Around the halfway mark, the route enters the Speerpunt area, known for its picturesque waterways and traditional Dutch windmills. Keep an eye out for herons, swans, and the occasional stork nesting atop old chimneys. The canals here are lined with reed beds, providing habitat for a variety of waterfowl. - Allemansgeest: The loop’s final section passes through Allemansgeest, an area steeped in local history. The name itself refers to a centuries-old estate, once a gathering place for local notables. While the original manor is private, the surrounding parkland is open to walkers and features mature trees, ornamental ponds, and glimpses of the estate’s stately architecture.
Nature and Wildlife
Throughout the walk, expect to see a rich variety of birdlife, especially in the spring and autumn migration seasons. The flat, open fields are home to hares and pheasants, while the waterways attract kingfishers and grebes. In summer, dragonflies and butterflies are abundant along the canal banks.
Historical Context
This region of South Holland has been shaped by centuries of water management and land reclamation. The network of dikes, canals, and windmills you’ll encounter is a testament to Dutch ingenuity in taming the landscape. Many of the estates and farms along the route date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, reflecting the area’s long-standing agricultural heritage.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The entire loop is on well-maintained footpaths, cycle tracks, and quiet country lanes. Surfaces are mostly paved or compacted gravel, so sturdy walking shoes are sufficient. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the waterways and in the parklands of Allemansgeest. Public toilets and cafés can be found in Voorschoten at the start and end of the hike.
