Loop
“Wander beneath wide Dutch skies along canals, fields, and orchards for a peaceful countryside escape.”
Starting from the outskirts of Amsterdam, this 13 km (about 8 miles) loop hike begins near the Osdorperweg area, easily accessible by public transport from Amsterdam Centraal via tram or bus to Osdorp De Aker, or by car with parking available along Osdorperweg. The route is almost entirely flat, with negligible elevation gain, making it suitable for all fitness levels and ideal for a leisurely day out.
Remisepad and the Zijkanaal F Waterways
The trail quickly immerses you in the tranquil Dutch polder landscape, following the Remisepad, a scenic path that traces the historic Zijkanaal F, one of the lateral canals branching from the North Sea Canal. This area is characterized by wide, open skies, lush meadows, and the gentle flow of water, offering a quintessentially Dutch rural experience just outside the city. The canal itself was constructed in the late 19th century to facilitate transport and drainage, and today it’s a haven for waterfowl, including herons, coots, and the occasional kingfisher. Keep an eye out for traditional Dutch windmills and the charming houseboats moored along the banks.
Lutkemeerpolder: Nature and Agriculture
As you continue, the route enters the Lutkemeerpolder, a unique agricultural polder with a rich history of land reclamation. This area is notable for its fertile fields, organic farms, and the ongoing efforts to preserve green space on the edge of Amsterdam. Depending on the season, you may see fields of vegetables, grazing sheep, or wildflowers lining the ditches. The polder is also a hotspot for birdwatching, especially during migration periods, with skylarks, lapwings, and swallows frequently seen overhead.
Wijsenkade and Rural Heritage
The trail then follows the Wijsenkade, a quiet country lane bordered by old farmhouses and orchards. This section offers a glimpse into the rural heritage of the region, with several farms dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Some of these properties are still in operation, while others have been converted into artist studios or local produce shops. The peaceful atmosphere is punctuated only by the occasional cyclist or local farmer tending to the land.
Navigation and Practical Tips
For navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and waypoints for this route, ensuring you stay on track through the network of dikes, paths, and minor roads. The entire loop is well-marked, but a digital map is recommended for the less obvious turns, especially in the Lutkemeerpolder where paths can be less distinct.
There are limited facilities along the route, so bring water and snacks. Public toilets are available at the start near Osdorperweg and occasionally at farm shops along the way. The trail is suitable for walking year-round, though waterproof footwear is advisable in wetter months due to muddy sections in the polder.
This hike offers a peaceful escape into the Dutch countryside, blending natural beauty, agricultural tradition, and a touch of local history, all within easy reach of Amsterdam.
