Loop
“Follow tranquil canals and wildflower meadows on this gentle, history-rich loop near Vroomshoop.”
The Oostendorper Weg, Veenriet Weg, and Hoones Weg Loop is a scenic 16-kilometer (approximately 10-mile) trail with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all skill levels. The trailhead is located near the village of Vroomshoop in the province of Overijssel, Netherlands.
Getting There
For those traveling by car, Vroomshoop is accessible via the N36 road. Parking is available near the intersection of Daarlerveenseweg and the canal. If using public transportation, Vroomshoop railway station is the closest stop, located approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the starting point. From there, local buses or a short walk will bring you to the trailhead.
Trail Overview
Starting from the vicinity of Daarlerveenseweg, the loop follows the Veeneleiding, a historic canal that once played a vital role in the region’s peat industry. The canal’s straight, tree-lined banks provide a tranquil backdrop, and the flat terrain ensures a gentle walk throughout. Hikers can use HiiKER for accurate navigation and to track their progress along the route.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
About 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) into the hike, you’ll pass the old drawbridge at Daarlerveen, a reminder of the area’s industrial past. The bridge and canal system were essential for transporting peat, which was harvested from the surrounding bogs and shipped to cities across the Netherlands. Interpretive signs along the way provide insight into this history, and the occasional remnants of peat-cutting equipment can still be spotted near the water’s edge.
Nature and Wildlife
The landscape is characterized by open meadows, reed beds, and patches of woodland. In spring and summer, the area comes alive with wildflowers and the calls of marsh birds such as reed warblers and herons. The canal itself is home to waterfowl, including coots and mallards, while dragonflies and butterflies are abundant on sunny days. Keep an eye out for roe deer in the early morning or late afternoon, especially near the quieter stretches of the trail.
Facilities and Preparation
There are limited facilities directly on the route, so it’s advisable to bring water and snacks. Benches are spaced intermittently along the canal, offering pleasant spots for a rest or picnic. The trail surface is a mix of gravel and compacted earth, suitable for walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots. As the route is exposed in places, sun protection is recommended, especially in summer.
Returning to the Start
The loop brings you back to your starting point near Daarlerveenseweg, making logistics simple whether you arrive by car or public transport. For those interested in extending their day, the nearby Engbertsdijksvenen Nature Reserve offers additional walking opportunities and a chance to explore more of Overijssel’s unique peatland habitats.
