Loop
“Follow tranquil boardwalks through blooming wildflowers, serene bogs, and storied bridges in Haaksbergerveen’s heart.”
Starting from the outskirts of Haaksbergen, this 26 km (about 16 miles) loop offers a flat, easy-going route with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Haaksbergerveen Nature Reserve, which can be reached by taking a train to Enschede or Hengelo and then a local bus to Haaksbergen. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Haaksbergerveen visitor center, close to the reserve’s main entrance.
Haaksbergerveen Nature Reserve
The first section of the loop leads you into the heart of Haaksbergerveen, one of the last remaining raised bogs in the Netherlands. This protected area is renowned for its unique peat landscape, rare plant species, and tranquil pools. Boardwalks and well-marked paths wind through the bog, offering a chance to spot wildlife such as cranes, curlews, and dragonflies. The area is especially beautiful in late spring and early summer when wildflowers bloom and the air is filled with birdsong.
Molenveldbrug and Onlandsbrug
After about 8 km (5 miles), the route crosses the Molenveldbrug, a small bridge that spans a network of drainage ditches and canals. These waterways are a testament to the centuries-old Dutch tradition of land reclamation and water management. The bridge itself is a quiet spot to pause and observe the interplay between land and water, with reeds and waterfowl lining the banks.
Continuing through open meadows and patches of woodland, the trail reaches the Onlandsbrug at around the halfway point. This bridge marks the transition from the boggy landscape of Haaksbergerveen to the more cultivated fields and forests of the surrounding countryside. Keep an eye out for roe deer and foxes, which are often seen in the early morning or late afternoon.
Historical and Natural Highlights
The region around Haaksbergen has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to prehistoric times. The peat bogs were once harvested for fuel, and remnants of old peat-cutting trenches can still be seen along the route. Interpretive signs provide insight into the area’s ecological and cultural significance, explaining how the landscape has been shaped by both natural processes and human activity.
Navigation and Facilities
The entire loop is well-marked, but it’s recommended to use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and navigation. There are several rest areas and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the visitor center and at scenic viewpoints by the bridges. Public toilets and a small café can be found at the Haaksbergerveen visitor center, making it a good place to start and finish your walk.
This loop is ideal for those seeking a peaceful, nature-rich hike with easy logistics and plenty of opportunities to observe the unique flora and fauna of the Dutch peatlands.
