“A long, gentle wander where pine-dark forests open to bright heath, sand, and sleepy ridge-top villages.”
A long, mostly gentle day through the Drenthe countryside, this loop links broad conifer plantations, open heath, sandy tracks, and quiet villages on the Hondsrug ridge. Expect a steady rhythm rather than big climbs: about 33 km (20.5 mi) with roughly 200 m (656 ft) of total ascent, spread out in small rises and dips that you’ll feel more in your legs over time than in your lungs.
Because the start point wasn’t fully specified, most hikers begin this loop from the most practical access on the Gieten/Borger side of Boswachterij Gieten-Borger—typically near Gieten village center (Brink, 9461 Gieten, Drenthe) or near Borger’s Hunebedcentrum area (Hunebedstraat, 9531 Borger), both of which sit right on the edge of the forest and have straightforward parking and bus access. If you share a lon/lat, I can pin it to the nearest exact trailhead/parking area or landmark.
By car - Aim for Gieten (Brink area) or Borger (Hunebedcentrum / Hunebedstraat area) and use signed forest parking pull-ins (“P” signs) at the woodland edge. These are common around the forestry blocks and are usually the simplest way to start a loop of this length. - Arrive early on weekends—Drenthe’s forest car parks can fill quickly on fair-weather days.
By public transport - The most common approach is train to Assen or Groningen, then bus toward Gieten and/or Borger. From either village center, you can walk a short connector (often 0.5–2 km / 0.3–1.2 mi) to reach the sandy forest tracks and waymarked paths. - Plan for a long day: if you’re relying on buses back, check evening frequency and build in buffer time.
This is “easy” in steepness, not in length. Underfoot you’ll rotate through: - Wide forestry roads (fast, firm, sometimes a bit monotonous) - Sandy tracks (can be energy-sapping in dry spells) - Heath and singletrack-like footpaths (more scenic, occasionally narrow) - Short paved links near villages or road crossings
The Hondsrug is a long, subtle ridge formed by Ice Age processes, so the elevation comes as small, frequent undulations rather than a single climb. You’ll rarely feel exposed, but you will feel the distance—especially if you hit soft sand late in the day.
You’re walking through a classic Drenthe mosaic: managed forest blocks interspersed with open heath and agricultural edges. Key things to watch for along the way:
This area supports a mix of woodland and heath species. What you’re most likely to notice: - Roe deer at forest edges early/late in the day - Foxes and small mustelids (often glimpsed briefly) - Woodpeckers and songbirds in mixed stands; raptors over open heath - Insects and reptiles in sunny heath clearings (slow down and scan warm sandy margins)
Ticks can be present in heath/rough grass and along deer paths—long socks and a post-hike check are sensible.
For most hikers, 33 km (20.5 mi) on mixed surfaces is a 7–9 hour outing depending on breaks and sand conditions.
Waymarking can be good in Drenthe, but forestry grids create repeated junction patterns. The most common mistakes happen when: - Two sandy tracks run parallel and you take the “right-looking” one - You follow a wide forestry road that gradually pulls you off the intended line - You miss a smaller footpath turn at the edge of a clearing
Keep HiiKER handy at every major junction and especially when transitioning from wide track → narrower path.
