Loop
“Wander beneath ancient oaks and over blooming heath as woodland melodies and sparkling ponds enchant your stroll.”
Starting from the outskirts of Oisterwijk, a charming town in North Brabant, the Besselaar and Beekse Weg Loop offers a gentle 6 km (about 3.7 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Besselaar and Beekse Weg, just a short walk from the Oisterwijk train station, which is well-connected by regional trains and buses. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the station and along the quieter residential streets nearby.
Woodland and Heathland Landscapes
The route quickly immerses you in the serene woodlands and open heath typical of the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen nature reserve. Expect to walk beneath a canopy of oak, beech, and pine, with the forest floor often carpeted in moss and ferns. In spring and summer, the air is filled with birdsong, and you may spot woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional roe deer darting through the undergrowth. The trail meanders past several small ponds and wetlands, remnants of ancient peat extraction, now home to frogs, dragonflies, and a variety of waterfowl.
Points of Interest and Navigation
At roughly 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll pass close to the Van Tienhoven Monument, a tribute to the Dutch conservationist who played a key role in protecting these woods. The path continues along Beekse Weg, a historic route once used by local farmers and traders. Keep an eye out for traditional Dutch farmhouses, some dating back to the 19th century, nestled among the trees. The area is also dotted with information boards detailing the region’s history and ecology.
Navigation is straightforward, with well-marked paths and clear signage at junctions. For added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the loop and track your progress, especially if you wish to explore any of the side trails leading deeper into the reserve.
Flora, Fauna, and Seasonal Highlights
The heathland sections burst into color in late summer when the heather blooms, painting the landscape in shades of purple and pink. Throughout the year, look for evidence of wild boar and foxes, and listen for the distinctive calls of tawny owls at dusk. The wetlands attract herons and, in quieter moments, you might catch sight of a kingfisher skimming the water’s surface.
Accessibility and Facilities
With its flat terrain and well-maintained paths, the loop is suitable for families, casual walkers, and those with limited mobility. Benches are scattered along the route, offering peaceful spots to rest and enjoy the scenery. While there are no facilities directly on the trail, the nearby town center of Oisterwijk offers cafes, shops, and public restrooms, making it easy to combine your hike with a visit to this picturesque Dutch town.
