Loop
“Meandering through blossoming orchards and riverside villages, this tranquil walk dazzles with nature and history.”
Starting from the outskirts of Geldermalsen, a small town in the heart of the Dutch Betuwe region, this 14 km (about 8.7 miles) circular walk is a gentle, flat route with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Geldermalsen railway station, which is easily reached by regular trains from Utrecht and Den Bosch. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the station or in the nearby town center.
Navigating the Route
The path follows a mix of quiet country lanes, grassy dikes, and riverside tracks, with the meandering Linge River as a constant companion. Using HiiKER for navigation is highly recommended, as the route weaves through a patchwork of orchards, meadows, and small villages, with occasional unsigned junctions. The absence of significant elevation (0 metres/0 feet) means the walk is not physically demanding, but sturdy footwear is advised, especially after rain when some sections can be muddy.
Highlights Along the Way
*The Linge River and Wildlife*
The Linge is the longest river entirely within the Netherlands, and its banks are a haven for birdlife. Expect to see herons, kingfishers, and, in spring and summer, swans with their cygnets gliding through the water. The riverbanks are lined with willows and poplars, and in April and May, the surrounding orchards burst into blossom, filling the air with sweet scents and attracting bees and butterflies.
*Historic Villages and Landmarks*
At around 4 km (2.5 miles), the route passes through the village of Beesd, known for its 13th-century church and traditional Dutch farmhouses. The trail also skirts the edge of the Mariënwaerdt estate, a historic manor with roots dating back to a 12th-century Norbertine abbey. The estate is famous for its organic produce and seasonal farm shop, which is a worthwhile detour for refreshments.
*Koningsweg and Cultural Heritage*
The Koningsweg, or “King’s Way,” is an ancient route believed to have been used by royalty and traders traveling between Utrecht and the southern provinces. Walking this section, you’ll notice remnants of old cobblestones and the occasional milestone, reminders of the route’s historical significance. At about 9 km (5.6 miles), the path crosses a series of small bridges over the Linge, offering picturesque views of the river and surrounding countryside.
Practical Considerations
Public transport is reliable, with Geldermalsen station serving as a hub for regional trains and buses. Cyclists and walkers share some sections of the route, so be mindful of others, especially on narrow dikes. Facilities are limited along the trail, but Beesd and Geldermalsen both offer cafés, bakeries, and restrooms. The route is suitable year-round, though the best experience is during spring blossom or autumn harvest.
For navigation, download the route to your phone using HiiKER, as mobile signal can be patchy in rural stretches. Bring water, snacks, and a camera to capture the scenic river views and abundant wildlife.
