Loop
“Stroll through blooming fields, shady woods, and storied windmills on this tranquil Dutch countryside loop.”
Starting from the outskirts of Molenhoek, a small village in the Gelderland province of the Netherlands, this loop trail covers approximately 9 km (about 5.6 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it an accessible and leisurely walk for most hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Molenhoek train station, which is easily reached by regional trains from Nijmegen or Venlo. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the station and at several small lots in the village.
Getting Oriented and Navigation
The route is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS tracking for this loop. The flat terrain and clear signage make it suitable for families, beginners, and anyone seeking a relaxed day outdoors.
Woodlands, Heath, and Open Fields
The first section leads you through the Vretveld, a patchwork of open fields and small wooded areas. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the path, and you may spot hares darting through the grass. The landscape here is typical of the Dutch countryside—flat, expansive, and dotted with small farms and grazing livestock. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail enters a denser woodland, where oak and beech trees provide shade and the air is filled with birdsong. Keep an eye out for woodpeckers and the occasional roe deer.
Historic Windmills and Village Life
Approaching the halfway point, the loop skirts the edge of Molenhoek, whose name means “mill corner.” The village is historically known for its windmills, and you’ll pass close to the restored Molenhoek windmill, a classic Dutch structure dating back to the 19th century. This is a great spot for a short break and photos. The area around the windmill often hosts local events and markets, especially on weekends.
Wetlands and Wildlife
Continuing on, the trail meanders near small wetlands and drainage ditches, which are vital for the region’s water management. These areas attract a variety of waterfowl, including herons, ducks, and sometimes storks. The flat, open vistas offer excellent opportunities for birdwatching, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
Returning to the Trailhead
The final stretch loops back through quiet lanes and rural paths, passing by traditional Dutch farmhouses with thatched roofs. The landscape remains flat, with the total elevation gain for the entire hike being negligible—less than a meter (about 3 feet). The route is suitable year-round, though waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain due to occasional muddy patches.
Practical Tips
Public transport is reliable, with frequent trains to Molenhoek station from major cities. Cyclists will find bike racks at the station, and local buses also serve the area. Facilities are limited along the route, so bring water and snacks. The nearest cafes and shops are in Molenhoek village, just a short detour from the trail.
