Mooi Zeegse, Siepelveen and Kniphorsbosch Loop

You’ll be walking in the heart of Nationaal Park Drentsche Aa—a rare Dutch landscape where small streams still meander much as they have for centuries, threading through heath, wet meadows, sandy ridges, and old woodland. This loop is about 16 km / 10 miles with very little elevation gain (roughly 0 m / 0 ft overall), so the effort is mostly about underfoot conditions rather than climbing. Expect a true “Drenthe mix”: quiet village edges, boardwalk-like wet sections, sandy drift ridges, and some of the most archaeologically rich ground in the Netherlands.

Best start area (nearest clear landmark/address): the most practical trailhead for a “Mooi Zeegse” style loop is by Fletcher Hotel–Restaurant De Zeegser Duinen, Schipborgerweg 8, 9483 TL Zeegse (easy parking and a clear point to pin in HiiKER). (mooisteroutes.nl)
A second convenient landmark right in the village is Grand Café Het Witte Huis, Schipborgerweg 7, 9483 PH Zeegse (useful for a pre- or post-walk stop). (wittehuiszeegse.nl)

Getting to the start (car + public transport)

• By car: Navigate in HiiKER to Schipborgerweg 8, 9483 TL Zeegse (Fletcher Hotel–Restaurant De Zeegser Duinen). This is a straightforward, well-known access point on the edge of the heath/woodland. (mooisteroutes.nl)

• By public transport: This area is reachable by regional buses, but stops vary by route and day. A commonly referenced nearby access is via the Drentsche Aa region bus network; some route guides note bus access in the wider Zeegse/Gasteren area. Check current schedules and then pin the stop-to-start walk in HiiKER. (mooisteroutes.nl)

You’ll want waterproof footwear year-round—even on an “easy” profile, the Drentsche Aa system and its side streams can leave long muddy stretches after rain or during wetter seasons. (mooisteroutes.nl)

What the route feels like, section by section

0 to ~4 km / 0 to ~2.5 mi — Leaving Zeegse into the Drentsche Aa landscape

From the Zeegse edge you quickly trade village calm for open, low-lying nature shaped by water: reedy margins, wet grassland, and narrow creeks (“loopjes”) that braid into the Drentsche Aa system. The walking is typically easy-paced, but this is where you’re most likely to meet soft ground and puddled track—especially where paths run close to the stream corridors.

Nature to watch for here is classic Drentsche Aa: wetland birds along reedier edges, and in spring/summer the wetter meadows can be rich in wildflowers (some guides specifically mention orchid-rich marshy areas in season). (mooisteroutes.nl)

~4 to ~8 km / ~2.5 to ~5 mi — Siepelveen: peat, open water, and sand drift ridges

As you arc toward Siepelveen (an open area between Zeegse and Schipborg), the scenery becomes more dramatic: a broad wet basin with open water/peaty ground, backed by sandy ridges and drift-sand features. (drenthe.nl)

This is one of the most distinctive parts of the loop because you can see multiple landscape “chapters” in a small area: - Peat/wet heath vegetation around the ven (look for classic wet-heath shrubs
