Loop
“Stroll through Drenthe’s tranquil heart, where turquoise lakes, purple heath, and pine-scented air enchant every step.”
Nestled in the heart of Drenthe, the Gasselterveld and Sodemorse Weg Loop offers a gentle 7 km (about 4.3 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it an ideal choice for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a tranquil day outdoors. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Gasselterveld recreational area, just outside the village of Gasselte, with the nearest significant landmark being the Gasselterveld Lake—famed for its striking turquoise waters and sandy shores.
Getting There Travelers arriving by public transport can take a train to Assen or Groningen, then transfer to a regional bus heading toward Gasselte. From the Gasselte bus stop, it’s a short walk to the lake and the start of the loop. For those driving, parking is available at the Gasselterveld car park, close to the lake’s main entrance, with clear signage from the N378 road.
Trail Experience The loop begins by skirting the edge of Gasselterveld Lake, where the water’s vivid blue hue is a highlight, especially on sunny days. Early in the walk, you’ll pass sandy beaches and picnic areas—perfect for a break or a swim in warmer months. The path is wide, well-maintained, and mostly flat, suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.
Nature and Wildlife As you continue, the trail transitions into heathland and pine forest, typical of the Drenthe region. In late summer, the heath bursts into purple bloom, attracting butterflies and bees. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for woodpeckers, jays, and the occasional buzzard circling overhead. The forested sections provide shade and a peaceful atmosphere, with the scent of pine needles underfoot.
Historical and Cultural Highlights Drenthe is renowned for its prehistoric hunebedden (megalithic tombs), and while none are directly on this loop, the region’s ancient history is palpable. The area around Gasselterveld was once shaped by glacial activity, leaving behind the sandy soils and rolling heath that define the landscape today. Old farmsteads and traditional Drenthe villages nearby offer a glimpse into rural Dutch life.
Navigation and Safety The route is clearly marked, but for added confidence, hikers can use HiiKER to follow the loop and check for any updates or diversions. The terrain is easy, with no significant climbs or technical sections, and the entire loop can be completed in about 1.5 to 2 hours at a relaxed pace.
Facilities and Tips Restrooms and a small café are located near the main beach area at Gasselterveld. Bring water and snacks, as options are limited once you leave the lakeside. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash, especially in the nature reserve sections. The trail is open year-round, but the best time to visit is late spring through early autumn for the most vibrant scenery.
This loop is a gentle introduction to the natural beauty and quiet charm of Drenthe, offering a blend of lakeside relaxation, forest tranquility, and a touch of local history.
