Point-to-Point
“Wander beneath Friesland’s endless skies, where green meadows, bird-filled dikes, and storied towns await.”
Starting from the peaceful village of Ferwoude in Friesland, this 19 km (about 11.8 miles) route to Stavoren is a flat, easy walk through the heart of the Dutch countryside, with virtually no elevation gain. The trailhead is near the center of Ferwoude, close to the Kerk van Ferwoude, a recognizable landmark in the village. Ferwoude is accessible by regional bus from Bolsward, which connects to larger cities like Leeuwarden and Sneek, or by car with parking available near the church.
Through Friesland’s Open Landscape
Leaving Ferwoude, the path heads southwest along quiet country roads and dikes, with expansive views over green meadows and grazing sheep. The landscape is quintessential Friesland: wide skies, straight canals, and the occasional windmill. After about 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll reach the hamlet of Tillefonne, a tiny settlement marked by traditional Frisian farmhouses and a sense of rural tranquility. This area is known for its birdlife, especially in spring and autumn when migratory birds stop in the wetlands and fields.
Bocht Molkwar and the IJsselmeer Shore
Continuing for another 6 km (3.7 miles), the route bends toward Bocht Molkwar, a scenic curve along the IJsselmeer dike. This section is particularly striking, with panoramic views over the vast lake and the protected Molkwar bird reserve. The dike here is a popular spot for spotting spoonbills, avocets, and other waders. The wind can be strong, so bring a windproof jacket even in summer. The path is well-marked, but using HiiKER for navigation ensures you stay on track, especially where the route follows minor dike roads and farm tracks.
Historic Approach to Stavoren
The final 9 km (5.6 miles) lead you along the IJsselmeer’s edge toward Stavoren, one of Friesland’s oldest towns. Stavoren’s history dates back over a thousand years and it was once a powerful Hanseatic port. As you approach, you’ll see the town’s harbor and the famous Lady of Stavoren statue, a symbol of local legend. The town itself is a pleasant place to end your hike, with cafés, historic buildings, and a railway station offering direct trains to Sneek and Leeuwarden for your return journey.
Throughout the hike, the terrain remains flat and easy underfoot, making it suitable for all levels of walkers. The route is exposed, so sun protection is important, and there are few shops or cafés between Ferwoude and Stavoren—carry enough water and snacks for the journey. The combination of open landscapes, birdlife, and historic towns makes this a rewarding day out in Friesland’s unique countryside.
