Loop
“Wander through shifting sands, lush beech woods, and sparkling streams on this tranquil Veluwe escape.”
The Leuvenumse Beek via Beekhuizer Weg is a serene 6-kilometer (approximately 3.7 miles) loop trail located near Harderwijk in the province of Gelderland, Netherlands. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy trail is ideal for hikers of all ages and skill levels.
Getting to the Trailhead
The trail begins near the Beekhuizerzand area, accessible from Harderwijk. For those traveling by car, parking is available at the Beekhuizerzand parking area, located along the Hierderweg, just past the YMCA campsite. If you're using public transportation, Harderwijk is well-connected by train. From Harderwijk Station, you can take a local bus towards Hierden and alight near the Hierderweg; from there, it's a short walk to the trailhead.
Trail Overview
Starting from the parking area, the trail quickly immerses you in the diverse landscapes of the Veluwe region. The path is well-marked with green arrows, guiding you through a variety of terrains, including heathlands, sand dunes, and dense beech forests.
Heathlands and Sand Dunes
Shortly after beginning, you'll traverse the expansive Beekhuizerzand, a 200-hectare (494-acre) area of drifting sand dunes. This unique landscape was transformed from forest to sand dunes in 2004, offering a glimpse into the dynamic nature of the region. The open sands contrast beautifully with the surrounding forests and are home to specialized flora and fauna adapted to this environment.
Beech Forests and the Leuvenumse Beek
As you continue, the trail leads into lush beech forests, where the Leuvenumse Beek meanders through the landscape. This stream, one of the cleanest in the Netherlands, originates near the Uddelermeer and flows northward into the Veluwemeer. The clear waters support a variety of aquatic life, including the rare brook lamprey, which was rediscovered here after being absent for many years. The surrounding forests are also home to wildlife such as wild boars and red deer, so keep an eye out for these inhabitants.
Historical Significance
The region is rich in history, with the nearby Staverden Estate being a notable landmark. While not directly on this trail, Staverden is known as the smallest city in the Netherlands and boasts a castle with origins dating back to the 13th century. The estate's white peacocks are a symbol of the area and have a storied history tied to the castle.
Trail Conditions and Considerations
The trail is predominantly flat and well-maintained, making it suitable for families and casual hikers. However, sections near the Leuvenumse Beek can become muddy, especially after heavy rainfall, due to the stream's tendency to overflow and flood adjacent forest areas. It's advisable to wear waterproof footwear to keep your feet dry during wetter periods.
Navigation and Safety
While the trail is well-marked, carrying a reliable navigation tool is recommended. HiiKER offers detailed maps and trail information to assist you during your hike. Always stay on designated paths to protect the delicate ecosystems and ensure your safety.
Amenities and Facilities
Approximately halfway through the hike, you'll pass near the village of Leuvenum. Here, you can take a short detour to find cafes and restaurants, perfect for a rest and refreshment before continuing your journey.
Embarking on the Leuvenumse Beek via Beekhuizer Weg trail offers a delightful experience through some of the Netherlands' most picturesque and ecologically significant landscapes.
