“Wander through tranquil woods, blooming heath, and hidden history on this gentle loop near Lunteren.”
Starting from the outskirts of Lunteren, Gelderland, the Leuvenhorst and De Zandmolen Loop offers a gentle 10 km (about 6.2 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Postweg and Hessenweg, just a short walk from the Lunteren train station, which is easily reached by direct train from Ede-Wageningen or Amersfoort. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Lunteren station or at small lots along Postweg.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The loop meanders through a patchwork of heathland, mixed forest, and open farmland, providing a tranquil escape into the Veluwe’s lesser-known landscapes. Navigation is straightforward, with well-marked paths and clear signage, but for added confidence and route tracking, HiiKER is recommended as the exclusive navigation tool.
Key Landmarks and Points of Interest
Leuvenhorst Estate (approx. 2 km/1.2 miles in): Early in the hike, you’ll pass through the historic Leuvenhorst estate, a former country retreat surrounded by stately trees and serene ponds. The estate grounds are dotted with remnants of 19th-century landscaping, and in spring, carpets of wildflowers brighten the undergrowth.
De Zandmolen (approx. 5 km/3.1 miles in): The halfway point brings you to De Zandmolen, a centuries-old sand mill site. While the original mill is no longer standing, interpretive signs explain its role in local agriculture and sand extraction, which shaped the region’s unique topography. The open sandy patches here are a favorite basking spot for lizards and a hunting ground for kestrels.
Nature and Wildlife
The loop traverses a mosaic of habitats, from dry heath to dense oak and pine woods. Roe deer are frequently spotted at dawn and dusk, while woodpeckers and nuthatches animate the forest canopy. In late summer, the heath erupts in purple blooms, attracting butterflies and bees. The area is also known for its population of sand lizards, especially near the sandy clearings around De Zandmolen.
Historical Significance
The region around Lunteren has a rich history, with traces of prehistoric burial mounds and ancient trade routes. The sand mill at De Zandmolen is a reminder of the area’s agricultural past, when sand was extracted and used to improve local farmland. The Leuvenhorst estate reflects the 19th-century trend of wealthy families establishing rural retreats in the Veluwe, shaping much of the landscape seen today.
Getting There
By public transport, take the train to Lunteren station, which is about 500 meters (0.3 miles) from the trailhead. From the station, follow signs toward Postweg and the start of the loop. By car, set your navigation to Lunteren station or Postweg, Lunteren, where you’ll find parking options.
