Loop
“Wander through whispering woods, purple heath, and storied windmills on this gentle Dutch countryside loop.”
Nestled in the heart of the Netherlands, this 15 km (about 9.3 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Bussum, just a short journey from Amsterdam. For those arriving by public transport, Bussum Zuid railway station is the closest access point—less than 1 km (0.6 miles) from the start. If driving, parking is available at the Bussum Zuid station or at the nearby parking area on Struikheiweg.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route weaves through the serene Koopmansbosch forest, across the open heathlands of Tafelberg, and circles the historic De Zandmolen windmill. The terrain is predominantly sandy paths and forest tracks, with occasional stretches of boardwalk over wetter ground. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and real-time route tracking, HiiKER is recommended.
Koopmansbosch: Woodland Tranquility
The first section leads through Koopmansbosch, a mixed woodland known for its towering Scots pines and ancient oaks. In spring and early summer, the forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers and ferns. Birdlife is abundant—look out for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional tawny owl. Red squirrels and roe deer are sometimes spotted darting between the trees.
Tafelberg Heathlands: Open Vistas and History
Emerging from the woods, the trail opens onto the Tafelberg heath, a vast expanse of purple heather in late summer. This area is a remnant of the once extensive Gooise heaths, shaped by centuries of grazing and peat cutting. The Tafelberg itself is a low, sandy rise—one of the highest natural points in the region, though only a few meters above sea level. The heath is dotted with juniper bushes and home to skylarks, buzzards, and the rare sand lizard. In the distance, you may spot the silhouette of the Tafelberg water tower, a local landmark.
De Zandmolen: Cultural Heritage
At roughly the halfway mark, the route passes De Zandmolen, a historic windmill dating back to the 18th century. Once used for grinding sand for glassmaking, the windmill is a testament to the region’s industrial past. While the mill itself is not always open to visitors, its striking profile makes for a memorable photo stop.
Practical Tips and Wildlife
The loop is well-marked and suitable for families, with benches and picnic spots scattered along the way. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in nature reserves. The sandy soil drains quickly, so the trail remains walkable even after rain, though sturdy footwear is recommended. In autumn, the woods are rich with mushrooms, and the heathlands attract migrating birds.
Water and refreshments are available in Bussum, but there are no facilities directly on the trail, so bring enough supplies for the day. Mobile coverage is good throughout, and HiiKER provides reliable offline maps for navigation.
This loop offers a peaceful escape into Dutch nature, blending woodland, heath, and heritage in a single, easy day’s walk.
