Loop
“Staverden’s woodland loop weaves together castle charm, peacocks, and wildflower meadows in enchanting harmony.”
Nestled in the heart of the Veluwe region, this gentle 3 km (about 1.9 miles) loop with virtually no elevation gain (0 metres/0 feet) begins near the enchanting Staverden Castle, one of the smallest cities in the Netherlands and a site steeped in medieval history. The trailhead is easily accessed from the Staverden estate, located at Uddelermeerweg 2, 3852 NK Ermelo, a well-known landmark in the area. For those arriving by public transport, buses from Ermelo or Harderwijk stop at Staverden, from where it’s a short walk to the castle grounds. Drivers will find ample parking at the estate’s main lot.
Staverden Castle and Estate Grounds
The route starts at the whitewashed Staverden Castle, a manor house with origins dating back to the 13th century. The castle is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, ornamental ponds, and historic outbuildings. As you set off, take a moment to admire the peacocks that roam the grounds—descendants of birds kept here for centuries, once bred for their feathers to adorn the hats of Gelderland’s nobility.
Woodland Trails and Waterways
The loop quickly leads into the estate’s ancient woodlands, where broadleaf trees such as beech and oak form a dense canopy overhead. The path is well-marked and mostly flat, making it accessible for families and those seeking a leisurely stroll. At approximately 1 km (0.6 miles), you’ll cross a charming stone bridge over the Staverdense Beek, a clear stream that once powered local watermills. Keep an eye out for kingfishers darting along the water and the occasional roe deer grazing at the forest’s edge.
Historic Features and Wildlife
Midway through the hike, you’ll pass the old Orangerie, a glasshouse used for overwintering exotic plants, and the estate’s dovecote, both reminders of Staverden’s aristocratic past. The trail meanders through meadows dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer, attracting butterflies and songbirds. Interpretive signs along the route provide insight into the estate’s history and the unique flora and fauna of the Veluwe.
Navigation and Facilities
The entire loop is easy to follow, but for those who prefer digital navigation, the route is available on HiiKER, which provides up-to-date trail maps and waypoints. Benches are placed at scenic spots for rest, and there are public toilets and a café near the castle, perfect for a post-hike refreshment.
This short, easy walk offers a blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and centuries-old heritage, making it a delightful outing for visitors of all ages.
