Point-to-Point
“Meandering from Epen to Moelingen, this scenic route weaves together wildflower meadows, shady forests, and borderland history.”
Starting from the charming village of Epen in the southern Dutch province of Limburg, this 23 km (about 14.3 miles) route gently winds through the rolling hills and patchwork fields of the border region, with a total elevation gain of approximately 200 metres (656 feet). The trailhead is easily accessible: Epen is well-served by local buses from Maastricht and Heerlen, with the nearest stop at Epen, Wilhelminaplein. For those arriving by car, parking is available in the village center near the historic Sint Paulus Bekering Church.
Through the Limburg Hills and Henenbergpad
Leaving Epen, the route quickly immerses you in the quintessential Limburg landscape—undulating meadows, half-timbered farmhouses, and narrow country lanes lined with wildflowers. The Henenbergpad section is a highlight, offering panoramic views over the Geul Valley. This area is renowned for its biodiversity; keep an eye out for buzzards circling overhead and, in spring and summer, orchids and wild thyme along the path. The trail follows a mix of gravel farm tracks and grassy paths, with gentle ascents and descents that make it suitable for most fitness levels.
Crossing Borders: Hoogbos and the Belgian Connection
At around the halfway mark, the trail enters the Hoogbos, a tranquil woodland straddling the Dutch-Belgian border. The forest is home to roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds. The path here is shaded and soft underfoot, especially after rain. As you approach the border, the landscape subtly shifts—Belgian villages appear with their distinctive stone houses, and the language on signposts changes from Dutch to French.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
This region has a rich history shaped by its borderland position. The route passes several World War II memorials and old border markers, silent witnesses to the area's turbulent past. In the village of Slenaken, about 7 km (4.3 miles) from the start, you’ll find the striking St. Remigius Church and several inviting cafés—an ideal spot for a break.
Final Stretch to Moelingen
The last section descends gently into the Belgian village of Moelingen (Mouland), known for its picturesque stone bridge over the Berwinne River and its historic watermill. The village is a short walk from the train station at Visé, providing easy onward connections to Liège and Maastricht. For navigation, HiiKER offers detailed maps and GPS tracks to keep you on course throughout the journey.
Expect a blend of open countryside, woodland, and historic villages, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy the region’s unique cross-border culture.
